of course it would, you shouldn't set it every frame nor should you check it.
Many users do this, and come to find that their framerate drops to 25fps, because the subscreen, and other item-intrinsic events, are trying to update every frame.
This could have, and should have been fixed ages ages: It took all of three lines to correct this problem. Checking it every frame is not, nor has it ever been, a problem.
