I'm helping a friend set up a website for her new business and am looking for ideas to help advertise/promote it on the internet. Anyone got any good ideas?

Word of mouth. Everything else is too expensive.
Set up bots on Yahoo! Messenger and send out tons of spam e-mail about it. That always seems to work for the penis enlarging biz.
Post about your services on Craigslist for various cities.
Hmm, shame most boards have rules against advertising, because that really is the fastest way to get word of mouth across the net.

Not really, because if they didn't, it'd be seconds before the board was flooded with spam.

I guess in that case the staff should just use their best judgement.
If it's a well thought out post saying, "Hey, I know you guys at [insert forum here] are interested in this kinda stuff, and I just started a site..." let it stay.
If it's a la Lightning Z, well, yeah, bam, poof, bye bye.
Alas, it's not a perfect world.
