Running old versions of ZC in Vista using DOSBox

I'm just wondering if anybody has tried and succeeded in running ZC 1.90 (or older) using DOSBox in Vista. I tried and it actually worked pretty well... until I tried to pick up an item, any item, any quest, and got this:

Help files and their message boards yielded nothing.

So does anybody have a success story they'd like to share?

Mind you, I'm doing this purely for my own amusement. If I can't get this to work I'll just move on to my next abomination, like trying to find a job.

Update: The same thing happens in XP as well. Using ZC 1.84 makes no difference. Must be an Allegro thing...
