718 - No Selector

14 replies · 3,120 views · Started 31 January 2008

I've set the Selection (1) and (2)'s graphics, put their appropriate elements on the subscreen, but they don't show up. It's like they're not even there (Can't even select items)

Applies for both the editor and player

(731) As far as I can tell, yes. Just downloaded it and checked it, and there's still nothing

Are any of those checked?
Is it's "item number" lower than where it's being placed, so it's being covered up?

In the latest build of ZQuest, I can get the selector to work, but it still doesn't show up. Before, item names wouldn't even appear in the text frame, now they do, but there's no visual. In the player, however, it still doesn't work at all

Is there any way I can send it directly to one of you guys? I'd rather not post it for everyone to get

I bet that the selector is behind something solid (like a frame). Make sure that the selector has a higher index value than anything else. In the top group of 4 arrows on the right side of the subscreen editor, click the up arrow until it grays out. The selector should stay visible then.

Err, I'm not having the problem. Are you sure it's not a problem on your end? I used the Z1 template, so it may be the layering problem. Try using this type of order of elements for subscreens:

Background
Dialog Boxes and 2x2 Frames
Dialog Text (ex. Triforce, Inventory)
Items & Equipment, Magic and Life Meters
Item-Orientated Text (ex. Selected Item Name)
Selectors

You shouldn't have any problems with that style of order.

The problem's that the subscreen isn't quite set up right: you have no Current Item with position 0, which is where the selector starts at the start of the game, so the selector is permanently stuck at this (nonexistent) position. Moreover, in order for the L/R keys to work correctly, it must be possible to reach every item using only the left/right keys, so, even after fixing the boomerang to have position 0, Link will only be able to access one row of items with the L/R keys, since the rows are not connected.
Lastly, the "left" next position for the boomerang is incorrect.

There is, however, something buggy with selectors when set to "large"; I'll look into it.

Ok. The selector tiles aren't set up correctly. To use a big selector, you need to place all of the tiles for the top-left corner of the selector sequentially on the tile sheet, followed by all of the tiles for the top-right tile, etc, instead of the current block form you have.

Somewhat unintuitive, yes, but I don't want to break old quests at this point.

Lastly, you need to change the background of your selector tiles to be transparent, or else you can't see the item beneath it. Alternatively, change the order in the subscreen so the items are drawn above the selector.
