when opening a quest in zquest that is passworded... it will ask for the password... now alt-tab out then back and screen will stay blank for awhile then you will get a "this program has caused an illegal operation and must be shutdown" message.

I can confirm this bug. I tried experimenting to verify the bug, and it is a true one. I have Windows XP so the error message is different.
yes i have windows xp as well but i don't remember what the message is... i just know its the same as what i said except worded differently. (and i tested this only on win XP home sp2)
This bug only seems to appear in fullscreen mode.

When the screen goes blank, does pressing ESC help? I got the screen to go blank but I can always ESC out of it.
I've found the problem: when you reopen ZQ after ALT-TABing, the menu gets a repaint message, which calls do_animation, which tries to cycle the pallete, which crashes since the Map.CurrScr() pointer is stale. I've given up trying to make sense of the zmap class for now; I'll try again later.

Yeah, those details are meant mainly for the other devs... but I also wanted to let you know that there is progress and I haven't forgotten about the bug.

in answer to koopa's question... no, esc doesnt do anything.
this appears to be fixed, at least i didn't get the crash.
