Error help

I ran beta 183 as an admin, and zquest-w.exe worked fine. But when I ran zelda-w.exe, it didn't work. It just appeared on the status bar for about half a second, then disappeared, and nothing else happened.

You're getting closer 😊
did you set it to mimic windows 95/98?
if so, try deleting out the ag.cfg file and double clicking on zquest-w.exe and playing a midi, so it can write you a new ag file, that might fix it.

Well, I played Lost Woods in ZQuest, then stopped it, then exited ZQuest. When I ran zelda-w.exe, the screen went black, then returned to the desktop and that was all it did.

I checked the allegro.log, and got something identical(or nearly identical) to this:

loading data file...error loading sfx.dat

Alright, I downloaded those sfx.dat files (the "spooky" one wouldn't work--a bad link I believe), and allegro.log isn't showing any errors anymore, but zelda-w.exe is still just blacking out the screen for a second or two before an error report comes up.

I played the Lost Woods and everything, as well as run it under 95 and 98, but nothing helped.

If changing from fullscreen to a window might help you'll have to tell me how. Other than that, I've got no idea what's going on.

You didn't need all those sfx.dat files, really only the 1 original for the 183 at the bottom.

If it's saying you have an sfx.dat file problem then that's probably what it is, I had it do the exact same thing to me.

BUT if you want to try it in window mode, you make a shortcut for zelda-w.exe and then right click on it and choose properties and put in -windowed after the target...
well, I'm lazy... check out this thread at Elise's board.
http://www.zeldaclassicforum.com//thread/95/

Running it windowed had no effect. It open, it closed, and then an error report came up, saying that zelda-w.exe had encountered a problem. And allegro.log is showing no errors at all.

Have you tried installing Zelda to a different path? I currently defaults to c:\program files\zc2.10. Change it to something elsse and see what happens.

Well, I just went over this whole thread again for the 184 beta, doing everything to it that I tried on the 183 beta, and BAM, it ran like lightning. Must be something about the 183 beta.

Anyway, thanks for all your help, Freedom. You're the man!

That's great news!
I had to tweak all the earlier versions, but for me the 2.10 opened a ran from the start.
I imagine different operating systems make programmers want to pull out hair.

Allegro comes with the betas how are you having trouble? You might need to reinstall it or get a new one in downloads.
