I put potassium in water all the time. It's not that impressive, really. We only have 3 people in our chemistry class, so we get to do pretty much whatever we want. There's an abandoned garage next to our school, so whenever we don't feel like studying anymore we raid our teacher's chemistry closet, get out the K, and lob it into a barrel full of water outside in the garage. It didn't do much... nothing more spectacular than a hydrogen explosion.
