    Video Game Confessions

Antony's videos have got me to thinking, there are definitely some classic games I missed out on as a child. For many of these, I've since rectified the problem, but I've realized there are at least two major glaring examples of games I just never got around to playing. And I mean, these are some serious gaming sins, I think. So I thought, hey, let's devote a thread to discussing some of the horrible gaming sins we've committed in the past. I'm sure we all have deep, dark gaming secrets that torment our souls and give us no peace. Whether it's skipping a classic game, beating a game by cheating, or maybe even screwing over a sibling in multiplayer, I'm sure nobody's perfect. Let's just get that stuff out there and in the open so we can finally be absolved of our sins and move on with our lives.

For myself, there are two games that to this day bother me that I never actually played - Myst and Majora's Mask. Myst is understandable - it's a point and click adventure/puzzle game, and those things were never really my bag. However, the game was friggin' HUGE when it came out, so I feel terrible for having not even played it once. Majora's Mask is worse though. I've always been a huge fan of Zelda games, and many say it was one of the greatest Zelda games of all time - and I have no room to speak on the subject because I've never even once played it. I've started another runthrough of Ocarina of Time, and I've told myself that when I finish it, I'll move on to Majora's Mask - we'll see.

I've never actually finished Majora's Mask. It definitely is a different Zelda game, and it has a lot of good qualities, but the best one of all time it isn't.

Myst doesn't hold up well. If you want to play it now, it's pretty cheap on Steam, but I'd wager it will be pretty primitive and boring at this point. One of the things I liked so much about it when it was big was how pretty it was and how awesome it was to explore such pretty environments. Now it looks like 90's CG. Maybe I'm too harsh on it, I dunno.

My sins largely come from games I never beat: Majora's Mask, as I mentioned before, Final Fantasy on the NES (not the remakes, I've beaten the remakes), Mario 64 with 120 stars, Zelda II...

Yeah, Zelda II is the big one for me. I've always been a HUGE Zelda fan, and I've never finished one of the games that had a big impact on me as a kid. It's freaking hard! I know I'm not alone, but it still bugs me to this day that I've never beaten it.

Here's my main one: I've only ever played Pokémon games on emulators. Also, the DS action replay was pretty much my best friend when I was a kid, so that's how I beat most games on that platform.

I never beat FF3 (No, not FF6... damn international titles!). It's sitting in my DS library, mocking me. I think I got through like two dungeons before I got bored.

But it really bothers me when I own a game I haven't beaten... I should probably finish it... someday.

I don't feel bad for not beating Zelda 2, 'cause Lord knows I've tried. Yeah, it is friggin' brutal near the end. I DO feel bad for not beating Earthbound. I dunno, I keep trying, but every time I do, I get pretty far and then start to lose steam. See, that's what separates it for me - there are plenty of games I haven't beaten due to their difficulty, and I'm fine with that. It's when I love a game but just give up on it that I feel bad for not beating it.

I've never beaten Zelda II and I don't feel that bad about it. I consider it a lifetime goal! My real sin? I have never beat Super Mario Bros. It's true! I don't even think I have gotten that far! Maybe a little more than halfway through. I haven't played it in ages so I am not sure.

I've never beaten Zelda 2 without cheating, and I doubt I ever will. It's just not a fun game, and playing it a second time does not interest me on any level.

My sins are: I dislike Assassin's Creed. It was so completely boring. I was promised free roaming stealth-parkour action and got a Twilight Princess overworld (HUGE but empty) and gimped stealth. I tried SO MANY times, but stealth never seems to actually work as advertised. Trailers show the player sneak-killing a major target, but in game, it's just not possible. And even if I did have to go in gunsblades blazing, the gameplay is so monotonus I just could not get into it... and that is really saying something, as I have played all 7 core dotHACK games twice each... and those games have the most monotonus gameplay of all time, but a story that, for my money, at least slightly makes up for it. Assassin's Creed should have been a three hour long game.

Also, I am an inadvertant "collector"; I buy a game, fully intending to play it, but just put it on a fucking shelf. Or in a steam library. I have just over a hundred games, and haven't played more than seventy five percent of them. Christ, I've had The Witcher, The Witcher 2, Ys Origins, and Ys 1-3 in my library for about a year and haven't played any of them once. I've had the God of War Saga since it came out, but have only played Chains of Olympus HD. It was fucking brilliant, and I loved it, but I never played any of the other 4 games on the disk. It's completely insane. Next thing you know, I'll buy games for systems I don't even own. -_-

PLAY IT. Final Fantasy III is the best of the NES trilogy. Gameplay wise, it's better than IV. Of course, V's job system is better, and everything about VI is Christlike, but III is the first great Final Fantasy game.

I've never played more than ten minutes out of the entire Final Fantasy series. Really, I played VI (III) on the SNES for about ten minutes, then got distracted by something, and never touched it again. Guess I'm just not an RPG guy.

I have beaten Zelda 2, and can do so easily. There are some rom hacks that can kick my tail though. I can't beat Battletoads, period. My reaction time is just too slow.

I don't own a console newer than an SNES. (Well, I do have a Gameboy Advance, but that's a handheld.) Everything I've played has been on emulator. There just aren't enough games coming out that appeal to me to justify the purchase.

The Titan's Quest, best played in the bathroom as the excitement can be somewhat...overwhelming.

I got a Skittles game from a friend and it had decent graphics and game play for the Times, but I just made fun of it, claiming that "I won!" by jumping off a cliff in game repeatedly right at the beginning, because it wasn't apparent to me what I should do. I regret getting rid of it before giving it a chance because that was rude to the makers and people who brought it to me.

Also, I played all the way to the end of Xenogears and did not win, it didn't seem possible because there was a safe point with the boss battles right at the end. Tragically, I never restarted to finish the game.

Speaking of Zelda II, I ceased my own production of Zelda II on ZC, hoping someone would jump on my request for a help in map creation. (Same story with LttP)
Still might have time for both of these later on though.

I am distracted by new games easily. How bad? My game backlog dates all the way back to the N64 and Dreamcast.
