Nostalgic Games - Legendary Wings on NES

One of the games I remember most as a kid was Legendary Wings. My dad bought it because he was a big fan of shmups in the 80s. I remember watching him play it a lot. I loved the graphics and music. I don't think he ever finished the game. I beat it for the first time after I bought it about a year ago. I can get through it pretty easily without much trouble now. I remember playing it as a kid and naming the bad guys weird names like "Heartbeats", which where little manta ray like enemies, and "Stone Babies", which were the stone looking things that rotate in a group of 4.

Yes, this is a shameless self promotion.

I remember that game from when I was kid as well. It was fun, but I don't remember ever beating it. I think I was too engrossed by the backgrounds (they looked awesome for the 80's).

A few other games that I have fond memories of are Super Mario Bros (2 and 3), Legend of Zelda (1 and 2), Donkey Kong Classics, Double Dragon 2, Castlevania (2 and 3) and Mega Man 5 (it was the first of the series I ever owned, the others I had only rented/borrowed) and still enjoy booting these up and playing them to this day every now and then (like once or twice a month) whether its on my 3DS/Wii Virtual Console or via emulation on my pc.

Ah old school Capcom. The music and sound effects for the game is very Mega Man like. Some of the sound effects are the same. I haven't heard of Legendary Wings before actually - or at least it's not a game I am familiar with so if I ever came across it I never would have given it a second thought. Nice review. I will have to keep my eyes peeled for it if I go NES game hunting down the road.

A lot of the sound effects are used in the early Mega Man games too. I think I have some footage in there of the drill enemies that also appear in Mega Man 2. I'm pretty sure the sprites are exactly the same.

I am not surprised at all. I think Capcom and others did the same thing back then to keep production costs and time down. Use what you have.

I remember seeing Legendary Wings in some gaming magazine back when I was a youngling, but never actually got to play it until much, much later. I ended up being actually a little disappointed - the game had looked so awesome, but it proved a tad too difficult for my adult-gamer sensibilities. I don't know if it's slower reflexes, or the fact that I no longer have that dogged persistence I had as a kid to constantly replay a game no matter how much I sucked until I started to get good at it. I actually kinda miss that aspect of being a kid. Now it just seems kinda funny that, no matter how hard a game was, I'd just keep playing it over and over until I started to get the hang of its quirks - which unfortunately led to me giving a lot of really crappy games much more time than they really deserved, but I dunno, there was something about that stubbornness that I really admire about my past self.

I know exactly what you mean. I've been trying to play through The Guardian Legend and Castlevania III, but they're both so hard and I just get tired of playing through the same spots over and over. I would play games like Legendary Wings until I had the hang of them, and then I'd be really good. I have no idea if games like Mega Man 2, Super Mario Bros, etc are hard because I've played them so many times over the years that I have just about everything memorized.
