This game got me into RPGs. After playing this, I became an RPG junkie. I couldn't get enough. When the PS3 came out, however, the quality of video game JRPGs just didn't seem as good. They didn't really offer anything new. Thoughts?

I believe as the emphasis became more and more about visual presentation it became less and less about thematic presentation; the storylines became weaker and weaker because so much of the budget was being dedicated to the rendering.
With as HD-crazed as the modern gamer is, I unfortunately believe this trend will continue.
When limited by pixels game companies have to get creative in other ways.
I completely agree with this. So many games now look so pretty, but lack any kind of character beyond that. This is why I like older games more than modern ones. There is so much more charm to older games because of the sprite based graphics and the need to come up with creative ideas to get around limitations.

This game was my first Final Fantasy. Not my first RPG, as I did own Dragon Warrior on the NES. I agree, this the game that got me hooked on Final Fantasy as well as RPGs as a genre. I've even named one of my personal fictional characters after Kain from this game. The rough translation is kind of endearing to me. I have fond memories of Yang saying "We are late," and me wondering what time the party was supposed to have started.
As for later games, I believe the developers of FF13 flat out said that gamers wanted a graphically focused game, and they couldn't make a openly exploreable world with such high quality graphics. Another thing in newer games is the combat systems get more complex and convoluted, since everyone wants to do something that hasn't been done before. I like things simple.
