I only know what my dad says about tiff, and all he knows is that it uses "lossless compression" or something.
I think that BMP is to graphics as WAV is to audio—it's the standard uncompressed lossless "one-to-one" format, where each element is simply stored as-is. As such, you can easily see that the storage size of a 24-bit 640 x 480 pixel bitmap file is easily calculable, as it is 24 bits times 640 times 480, which equals 7,372,800 bits, or 900 KB (plus a few bytes extra for a header and whatever). Any BMP image of those dimensions and that color depth will be the same size, no matter what, as opposed to JPGs whose size for a given compression rate depends on the complexity of the image, or PNGs or GIFs whose size depends on the number of colors present, etc.
As far as I know, you're almost always going to be better off with a PNG, because you can make it so that it's always the same quality as the source bitmap, but potentially smaller in size.

Therefore, all men are Socrates.
