Yeah, he's one tile wide, two tiles high in AoL.
Scripting in the RPG elements doesn't seem like it'd be too daunting a task, either. Compared to other jRPGs, the system is fairly simple. Depending, of course, on how powerful Zelda Classic's scripting language is.
Actually, I think Link is three tiles high in AoL, because when he ducks, he goes to 2/3 his original height. Even if you duck next to a 1 tile ledge, he still is clearly taller. Also, if this is the case, does that mean to make a AoL style quest (without having to do scripting), Link would have to be doing the duck walk? That would be hilarious.

AoL Link is 32 pixels high; when he ducks he is 27 pixels high. I just checked.
