If they are a truly randomly selected sample, then even a small sample like 50 or 100 can represent the entire population with surprising accuracy. The problem is generally that first part - finding a truly random sample of people for your survey.
For instance, in this survey they only used people in Munich, Germany, meaning that the survey isn't really about people worldwide but people in Munich, Germany. True, the findings probably translate fairly well to the rest of the world, but since the rest of the world wasn't included in the survey, it doesn't actually say anything about them.
