You don't operate the quest file by open them externally, You have to go into ZC and register your name.

Press A which is usually the Alt key and press it again,

A quest description window will pop up and click the Browse... button

Select the quest file you want and press OK and you should be set!

Open any old folder. Go to Tool -> Folder Options. Click the File Types tab. Find "QST" and see if ZQuest is next to it. If it is not, click it and click the Change button. Find zquest-w and click OK.

If ZQuest is next to it, go to the View tab. Uncheck "hide extensions for known file types." Close everything. Find a ZQuest "game" and change all of them to "whateverthenameis.qst". Leave its original name, of course. Make sure you recheck "hide extensions for known file types" to hide the extensions.

If these tactics don't work, sorry.

Alright so I went there. It IS right next to QST. So I clicked it. Then I went to View and unchecked what you said. Now when I go to the Z Classic folder, all the test games (1stquest, 2ndquest, 3rdquest) are still in Adobe Reader. The thing after already says .qst.....so what now?

I did. The thing is, it says that the file cannot be opened. The reason is because it is now for Adobe Reader. Instead of the picture next to the quest being an unknown file, it is an adobe reader. I just need to know how to change it back so I can play the games...

Open Registry Editor, press F3 (to search), type '.qst' (without quotes) and press ENTER - delete any keys (the listing on the left) that contain that string.

Back up the registry first, in case you delete the wrong keys.

It doesn't sound like you're listening. You shouldn't see the icons for the QST files if you're actually in ZC when you bring up the list. And if you are inside the game itself, it doesn't matter what program QST files are associated with, so if you're getting an error message when trying to load a quest from within a game, that is not the reason. Like just about every other program, if you open a QST file from within ZC, it just plain opens it. It doesn't go out and check to see what program those files are associated with and then try to open it with that program.

Does the error that you're getting read "Error: Not a custom quest" by chance? If you're trying to open 1st.qst, 2nd.qst or 3rd.qst then that's your problem right there. Like the message says, these are not custom quests but rather the "standard" quests that come with ZC and as such, you can't open them directly. When you register your name, 1st.qst will be your quest by default. Just press enter and you're there. Beat that one and you'll move on to 2nd.qst and when you beat that one, you can play 3rd.qst. (There are also special names you can give yourself to "cheat" the game into letting you start right on the 2nd or 3rd quests, but that's a secret somebody else can share. I'm bored now).
You could no more evade my wrath than you could your own shadow...
