basically the format was one that didnt require a password and could be viewable with 3rd party editors.

Unencoded quest file exports fit all that criteria.
In ZQuest, go to File->Export->Unencoded Quest. It'll save as a .QSU (QueSt Unencoded). This is exactly how the recent versions of MapMaker read in your data.
