Lately I've been hit hard with a desire to turn my Windows 7 PC into as much of a modern day Windows 98 as possible. I dunno where the nostalgia came from, but it's hit me hard. With Windows 98 being my first OS, I felt it would be really interesting to see how accurate I could recreate it. After throwing a copy onto a virtual machine for reference, I'm at a bit of a stand still with some bits. Here's what I've got so far:

We've got the original start menu, sliding out menus, proper task bar (removed windows 7's show desktop by the clock thank god). Good ol' Trillian trying to emulate AIM as best as possible (used for Facebook messenger). I've never stopped using Winamp, so that fit right in. Biggest hurdle I'm at currently is finding the registry locations to change the system icons. I still need to be able to change those start menu icons, however my registry edits seem to not be doing anything there. I need to figure out how to change the shell icons for folders larger than medium view also (they revert back to the Windows 7 ones ).

Oh - and not pictured: everybody's favorite 3D FlowerBox screensaver. OpenGL's finest.
