Couldn't he still do that before he spoke to someone? He wasn't actually acquiring a new ability; a character was explaining to the player how to activate it.
You may be right, I haven't had that game open in a few years and don't remember for sure.
How about learning to run in LTTP?

I was thinking most of the Zelda's had learned behaviors.
