    Xbox One

Which I will hereafter refer to as X1 for the duration of this thread.

So now that the reveal has happened what are your thoughts. Personally I thought it was interesting, the voice commands seem nice and being able to do multitasking is pretty good.
However I'm not entirely convinced on getting this console, for several reasons. Some of these were mentioned in the show itself, while others have come to light from youtube channels
reporting about questions MS answered after the show (screwattack, escapist magazine, etc) such as: no backwards compatability with ANYTHING on 360 (this includes hard discs AND XL Arcade), pre-owned games require an additional fee as does lending your game to a friend, no DRM however you need the net to register your game to your account (which is then downloaded to the X1's HD).

I see this console destroying the used game/rental markets. You can't rent a game because of the registration process and if you decide to buy a used game you have to pay a additional fee just to play it.
The same goes for anybody who buys your used games from you. Or if you just LEND them to a friend who is interested in the game, but wants to try before they buy.

While there is no DRM, there is the need to have an active internet connection to register your new game to your account, which might as well be called DRM really You also can;t use most of the features without a internet connection (skype, internet, etc).

There are some things that still aren't confirmed about the X1 (price, the pre-owned/used game registration fee, etc) and while the games and all that look great, I'm not sold on the pretty visuals and all that alone.

Anyways, sorry if I went into rant mode or anything. Discuss or ignore this thread at your leisure.

Don't they already have an XBOX 1? ..So what, they decided to start over, but this time around try and rape everyone in the process? ..Lets see

-Required internet connection in 24 hour periods. Check.
-Required online registration of games to play them. Check.
-Required registration, and FEE$, for all used games. Check.
-No backward compatibility. Check. (But I'm sure they'll be nice and let you re-buy games you probably already have with xbox net.)
-This all sounds good, but I'm not buying a console that can't monitor my heart hate... can it? Check. (oh joy)
-Netbox first, gaming console second. Check.

    One word: Fuck you Micro$oft.
Do I really want a console that I can watch TV on? If I wanted to watch cable TV in the first place I would buy cable TV.
Do I need a console that can do half of what a PC can do but half as good? No. That's why I have a PC.
I guess they really want to transform my TV into a giant tablet.

Yeah, I'm not having any of that.

In my opinion, it's a perfectly just cause to be ranting. It's really quite the paradigm shift in what the casual or hardcore player expects to engage in while gaming, or perusing the electronic marketplace for entertainment. If Microsoft opts to force their hand, they'll have many mixed reactions. I haven't necessarily seen an influx of positive reactions to this either. It's rather disconcerting.

I feel Microsoft is shooting itself in the foot with this one, if it's true that internet connectivity is required to do anything on the console such as play a retail bought game. "Everyone is online" is not as true as you might think. Many people still don't have in-home internet, whether it be due to location, finances, or any number of other reasons. In fact I will have to tell a lady friend of mine, who is a single mother, not to get this for her son because it requires an internet connection they don't have. Myself, because of my location, I pay more than most people to get decent internet to my house because it's a rural area. I am ok with this cost, others are not.

As far as the used games issue goes, there are a lot of unknowns out there now so I'm going to limit myself to this one thought. If an internet connection is required to make the game work, be it registration code or gameplay, then why not make it a download and not even bother with a physical product? It's obvious they want to kill the used games market, so make it a digital download. Those can't be redistributed. Why half-ass it and make me drive to the store to pick up a disk that requires me to connect to the net to authenticate it. If the speed of said internet connection is an issue, then why are we even starting down this road?

Back at the end of last year, I was debating whether I should buy a 360 to play the 360 games I wanted, or wait until the new system was released. Looks like I made the right choice in buying the 360 as the X1 doesn't have backwards compatibility. I haven't used it much and I see no reason to buy the new one.

    Quote from fox news:
Indeed, the Xbox One demonstration was so impressive it made me wonder, why the heck didn't they do this with the disastrous Windows 8?
I'm going to do a complete 720 here (plus another 360...plus One...) and end up facing in the exact same direction I started (give or take one) and say that if there's anything worse than MS trying to control the way gaming worldwide, it's Fox News.

Wow. Those quotes make my head hurt.

Also, did anybody else think the X1's design looks kinda like an NES? I kept getting that vibe from the reveal.

I'm not really that surprised by the general entertainment focus they're trying to put on it. The idea of charging a fee to play a used game is, I think, a mistake. It also makes me wonder how they're going to handle rentals; will there be special activation codes, or simply no physical rental copies?

The idea that it can replace every box is the living room is simply absurd though; from what I understand you'll have to plug a cable box into the console itself to watch TV through it, and lack of backwards compatibility would require anyone who already owns an xbox 360 to keep that plugged in as well. Though on the whole, lack of backwards compatibility doesn't really bother me that much. PS4 isn't going to support it either.

I think the big problem here is there's no real focus. I think the downplay of gaming will turn off a lot of gamers, and I think the more or less uselessness of the other features (wow I can finally watch TV on my TV! Thanks, Microsoft!) will not make it a must-have entertainment hub for the general public.

I don't think this is going to fail, but I certainly don't think it's going to be the success Microsoft assumes it will be. I expect a stripped-down version eventually, focusing on a pure console gaming experience in the not-too-distant future.

or I could be wrong and it'll outsell the PS2. lawl.

So I'm browsing things with my laptop on the internet, and I see this thread. I check it out, and it reminds me of a system I saw back in 2000 or so about the "Infinti" - which was an automobile company I think - game console. It reminded me of that because of the 'must be online' feature that the infiniti console bolstered. It was 'high end.' Only richer people could buy one, because it was like $700 plus to start, and then monthly dues and whatnot, needless to say I never actually came across one ever, not sure if they even hit production, because I didn't even see one for sale.. Although I do remember something about Florida.. Like they were going to sell mainly in the southeast US was the deal or something.. (as far away from MS corp as possible)
Anyway, I'm searching browsers, and this wouldn't be the first incident of this type in my life, I type in something, even something completely random, and an ad-lib site comes up that is a word-around with /U Your Idea Here /U in the midst of a prefabricated article all about your new idea being the biggest thing on the internet. I ranted about this already here at AGN, but the U.S.P.T.O. office states that by US law, the ORIGINATOR of the idea holds all rights and patents, trademarks, and copyrights to any utility or material good they made first, with or without a registration.. Anyway, after reading the X-box 1 article I type that in, and these articles are not directing me, nor could google produce front-page search results for the Infiniti game console, like it never existed, but is claiming that XBox is going to be named XBox Infinity. That's alright either way even if they didn't just steal another genius idea.. Except for that this time they're not even stealing my idea.. It was someone else's.
Edit: upon consideration of the facts, I would've actually recommended to the board that the system be dubbed the "XBox -2." I would've went with "-1" but I like to think that people should, if they must become immersed in video game land, never to return, due to stunning visual graphics that rival even the sweetest scents of the cherry blooms in the orchards next to the waterfalls, that they should at least depart from the rest of us in pairs.
