How to use the raft

I just got the raft on Zelda Classic
do I have to do anything special to get it to work? I have tried to get to the next heart off the dock but nothing I have tried has got me there

what version are you using ? it doesn't work in the 211b15
It also can be if you only need to cross one space between that you need the ladder.
Otherwise just trying to walk of the dock should put you on the raft
