Can you play midis in ZQuest? If not, your sound card may be misconfigured. Try using agsetup.exe if you're running 1.90. If you're using 1.92, you'll have to get agsetup.exe manually.
If you are using DOS, I would suggest to get the windows version, because configuration is not needed.

I got the windows beta and unzipped it, but when I try to open it, it says it needs alleg40.dll to run.

Then get it. It should be offered for download in the same place as you got the other files. Do you have the support files?
