I just tried incorperating layers into my quest with less them perfect results....it acted like I had to draw the same screen on Layer 1 as I did with the base layer in order for the layers to show correctly.

All you need to do is fill the layer screen with the walkable transparent (black) tile before you start adding stuff to it. If it's not transparent, the layer below it won't show through.
