The java chat hasn't worked for awhile. Darkseid must be talking about mIRC. Why don't you download mIRC and use it instead?

www.downloads.com or www.tucows.com should both have them available for download. do a search for mirc or browse through the internet tools to the chat programs. there are several. mirc is pretty standard though and it's so widely used there's plenty of help available while you're learning to use it.
you can select the server to connect to on any network rather than limiting yourself to the java chat.
