I've come to realize I'd love to be able to "draw" interesting shapes on the ground in dungeons. As I've taught myself how to use the tile editor, I'm looking to do something else interesting with the concept. I know most dungeon drawing uses CSet 2 with its own unique palette, but there are a few black spaces in that CSet. Is it safe to change the color of one of those squares for CSet 2 so I can make unique dungeon tiles that form pictures? Which columns can I change?
That depends on the tileset you are using.
If you're using Classic (the one built into the editor), you're pretty much safe replacing any black color except for color index 4 (0 is the transparency 'x' and color indices count towards the right, then down. So color index 4 is the black color immediately below the lower left corner).
If you're using another tileset, there's no guarantee that black isn't in use by some of the tiles. Your best bet would be to make it a really obnoxiously bright color (63-0-63) and then scroll through the tile pages on that Cset and see if it made any tiles look funny. Always save before you do something like that, and if it does cause weirdness you can just revert the changes away and try a different color slot.
