Let's compile a list of some of the better fan games and rom hacks across the internet.
For example, I had never heard of Super Mario Bros X until now. (Link to come.)
Also, there is reggie! which is a New Super Mario Bros Wii Editor.
I'll add in some organization/editing as some suggestions come in.

somebody makes frequent updates to NHL '94 (SNES) that I enjoy very much.
Acmlm's board was the net haven of cool rom hacks. He's done some really cool stuff, like the Weird SMB series, and Maio Fantasy (an impressive hack of Final Fantasy 1).
Zophar's Domain was also the cool spot to go to for hacked games and hacking tools in general.

@Janus : Yeah its a pretty good game. the puzzles are pretty darn good to. :P but that's not all, the game has some pretty awesome dungeons.
