Re: Post screenshots of your quests here.
Maybe I should rename it to Mystical Forest if I want to keep the dark palette.
I'll see what I can do with that brush... hopefully, I can reduce its colors... that, or I'll put it in 256 colors.

7. Why stop at just fairies? Try ripping the Celebi, Jirachi, and Mew sprites from Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and add them to the mix.
... you are joking on that one, right? However... I must admit, it does seem tempting to add a Grass/Psychic type to a mystical/magical forest...
Thanks for all the tips and all! And the brush, because I agree - LttP ones suck. This'd REALLY help for my forest area (even though I suck at forests... but I WILL LEARN).
I'll definitely find myself a MIDI for the area... but that comes last, when I actually finish it all. The animals... maybe around the more residential areas, because everywhere else - hostile creatures.

Re: Post screenshots of your quests here.
If you want more help for forests with the DoR set, look these for an example, but replace the LttP treetops...

Notice that the edges of most of the screens are covered with the upper and lower brush, and how I strategically used the shadows to highlight certain areas. Take careful note of how almost none of the tiles in either shot are the plain grass tile, it's all detailed in some way. Finally, notice how I only have 3 types of trees. With the oracles trees, use no more than 3 of them within a single screen, which seems to be a large part of your problem with your shots in how they seem to be "overdone".
EDIT: 256 color? It turned out a little better in 256 color mode, but I'm not sure how that's gonna work out with your palette...

-> Hey, I like the idea of a creek running down the mountain. Eh... time to do some revamping of it.
Re: Post screenshots of your quests here.
Heres another approach...

Wiith my woods, I wanted to capture a feeling of immense size, so rather than show upper leaves like in Revfan's, I just used the overshadow, to imply imense height, ut also kept it light and airy by using a light overlay and adding lots of sun holes.
Heres my mountain:

I spiced it up a bit by changing the level of the background, both in depth and height, but I still feel it's missing somthing.

Thanks on all the forest tips. Currently, I've decided to temporarily replace all of the smaller trees (in the forest area only) with the same tree... but that'll change. Also Revfan9, unfortunately, that brush overlay doesn't work well with DoR. It does look really nice otherwise. Until I find something better, I'm stuck with bland ol' LttP overlay. Lame.
As for the mountain, use different cliffs. That'd REALLY help, because those cliffs just uhh... ... well, they don't work well (in my opinion) for mountains. DoR cliffs work pretty well for mountains. PureZC does have a good amount of better type cliffs for mountainous areas. Also, try not to make it so squarish. Really boring that way.

Mountain Example:

I didn't bother filling in the details. Because I know you guys can do that just fine. But here's an example of an interesting mountain layout. It may cause havoc with the screens just south (west/east) of this one, but man does it look awesome. Keep working with it and most of your mountains can be as layered and in depth as this.
Re: Post screenshots of your quests here.
Dang. That pic makes me want to completely redo my mountain. :p
Re: Post screenshots of your quests here.
I know how to use most tiles, but those top foilage tiles that Revfan is using on his forest. I've tried using those, but it always seems its missing tiles. Either that or I really don't know how to use them.
Re: Post screenshots of your quests here.
I think it's more dependant on the tileset you're using, and I think you'd need a heavily modified version of pure or DoR to pull it off. Otherwise, you'd pretty much need the tileset Revfan9 is using to actually put those foliage tiles to good used. I'd be glad to use a less detailed version of it that uses not too many colors... but I wouldn't be able to make the conversion. I think it's really that it's too detailed compared to the rest of the screen (when I tried it out, that is).
Re: Post screenshots of your quests here.
Actually, I just used the sprite Csets for those foilage tiles. I don't normally use the DoR set, but that was for a group quest in which I was forced to use it. Ah well.
Haven't posted any screens myself here in a while...
