Play It Forward - It's like book club but for games. We play games together. Discuss them...have a good time. Because for some reason I actually like some of you assholes. http://retroachievements.org/ will be tied in. By the way, why the fuck am I just finding out that's a thing? @Brasel (http://www.armageddongames.net/member.php?u=39587), have you seen this shit?

Maybe like a for real book club? That'd be fun to do together...right? Film club? Cocaine?

Achievement system for the forums--so instead of sig images we can actually be more organized.

I'll bring back Triforce Quest and get some of you to help me run it.

More staff and forum adjustments, because the veldt is gay.

Any other changes you'd like to see around the forums to get some activity up in here?

We still need a main site. Somebody tell @War Lord (http://www.armageddongames.net/member.php?u=38500) to do it so I don't have to.

Don't forget https://www.buttlotion.com

(Apparently this is actually a thing.)

I'm definitely on board with the retroachievements thing. We could have entire tournaments around it.

The retro thing sounds neat. I'd be down if we could get a regular schedule going.

I kinda like this idea. curious on the execution though.

Now's the time to present ideas.

I was just thinking we would pick one game every 2 weeks-1 month. Discuss it while we play through it. How we choose the next game is something we need to decide on. The person that completed it first/got the most achievements? It might get redundant if we go that route. Random drawing until everybody that's participating has picked a title and then cycle back through?

When I setup the AGN achievements we'll tie the "points" in somehow.

Glad to hear at least some of you are interested--it's given me motivation to replay titles that I've played through countless times and making sure I 100% them.

I down for whatever. I'm just concerned about scheduling. Mon&Tues are my days off, making those the days I'd be most likely to participate.

Plus, for the games, I'd say stick to NES/SNES at the very least. I didn't check that sites full list of emulators so I'm not sure what to suggest.

The supported platforms are:

Mega Drive/Genesis
Super Nintendo
Gameboy/Color/Advance
NES
PC Engine

You can get the emulators from their site or you can do what I'm doing and use https://www.libretro.com/index.php/retroarch-2/.

As far as N64 and PS1, it's not supported but we could still play them together strictly based on percent of completion. Anything newer would have to be seperate to account for users whose PCs or collection may not be up to snuff.
@mrz84 (http://www.armageddongames.net/member.php?u=38704), @King Aquamentus (http://www.armageddongames.net/member.php?u=40954), @Chris Miller (http://www.armageddongames.net/member.php?u=38634), since all three of you were the first to show interest, could you let me know a timeframe that would work for you?

For example, say I pick first and I pick my game to be Actraiser. http://retroachievements.org/Game/270. Take a look through the achievements--nothing too outrageous. (This community needs to blow up so there's more developers that think outside of the box...stuff like "did you collect that coin that spells certain death for the average video game player?") https://howlongtobeat.com/game.php?id=191 8 hours seems to be the max to completion. I haven't played it since the SNES days so I couldn't honestly tell you how long it takes for OCD gamers like myself.

According to your schedules though, what's realistic for "retro" games? Two weeks? One month? Longer?

I'll get a signup thread going for those interested. I'm not sure what my schedule will be like next week but we should be able to launch this around the beginning of March.

Also, what should we call this thing? Play it Forward? Byte Club? (Lol)

ctrl-alt-delete For me (as I mentioned in my previous post) I generally have Monday and Tuesday off. Any time of the day (except for late Tues night, that's usually D&D night at my place. Like 7pm onward is D&D time)

As for realistic for "retro" games........define retro. Are we talking how old a game is or how long it takes to complete across multiple periods of time?

As for a name...The AGN Society For the Study of Past Visual Culture (Dragon Omega made that suggestion, btw)? Or The AGN Retro Gamers?

What times you're available should be mostly irrelevant. I'm thinking we can discuss the games here so everybody can work at their own pace with their differing schedules. Really I'm just wondering how long we should focus on one or two games before moving to the next.

A couple of weeks per game seems fairly reasonable. It could be more for very long or very difficult games.

I'm already kind of part of a community that does something similar with the book club like thing. www.CartridgeClub.org But I wouldn't mind checking out what we do here too for sure.

By the way, we're going to do this with ZC quests too at some point. I tried to do it a while back but couldn't get it off the ground.

I would be interested in playing retrogames, but how exactly are you doing this? To my knowledge, no NES emulator supports Netplay. One SuFami emulator may, and I'm not sure on the others???

What precisely do you mean by 'play games together'?

Netplay will only be utilized sometimes. I basically mean a group of users playing through the same game simultaneously and discussing it together. Like book club for games. We can track the achievements and progress thanks to retroachievements.

So something else to add to that list: figure out a way to parse BBCode in users' profile fields. <3

I'm about to try disabling all of the board hacks to see if that does anything...maybe some stupid conflict.

Wouldn't the easiest solution just be to copy/paste a header every time you post?

MasterSwordUltima
02-27-2017, 12:02 AM
Not at all. The easiest thing to do is to set a header once and let it automatically format your posts.

It should work in tandem with your signature, which would have the closing tags to complete the format syntax properly.
