Grab a clock, use the candle, walk on the fire. You still get hurt. Was this the way it was in Zelda 1? I forget.

Yes it was. But there is an NES Fix quest rule that fixes this. The rule says 'Invincible Link Isn't Hurt By Own Fire Weapons'.
