I've always wanted to make my own Zelda romhack, and after participating in some mario related things with SMBX I found out about Zelda Classic. I'm not a huge fan of the first zelda game, but is this engine really customisable?

If I wanted to would it be easy enough to make a quest that looks and feels like Link's Awakening?

There is a tileset that contains the same elements as the Gameboy Zelda games. From that you should be able to come up with something to your liking.

As far as gameplay is concerned, the default enemy editor enemies mostly follow their Zelda 1 counterparts, so in order to make some of the things unique to Link's Awakening, you may have to familiarize yourself with scripting. You can make a quest that is a fairly decent lookalike without scripting, but with a little bit of learning you can do a lot more.

A lot of the elements of Link's Awakening are already supported though. Lock blocks, spin attack, etc. You're on a sort of middle ground, so to speak.
