Azure Striker Gunvolt is a new Nintendo 3DS eShop game by Inti Creates, supervised by Keiji Inafune, better known as the creator and main driving force of the Megaman series, and creator of the upcoming Mighty No. 9. Inti Creates, who are also working on the latter, were also known for their Megaman Zero and ZX series, as well as for their work on Megaman 9 and 10. The trailer is a bit long and goofy but what we have here is a shout-out to the 2D gaming era, akin to their Megaman Zero/ZX series games, with its own twist on things.

It came out last week, and I've beaten it today and feel like it deserves a little more attention. It's a very fantastic game, I've enjoyed it immensely. It wasn't too hard at all until near the very end I thought, and the final boss felt very satisfying to defeat, which is always a good feeling. The story's also surprisingly really good, which was a nice surprise as well, considering these are Megaman creators, and Megaman games aren't really the best as far as story goes. I wouldn't call the game revolutionary as the trailer seems to think, but it's been a fun ride, with neat powers, abilities, and customization; you can collect items to forge new items or weapons, or collect them from gameplay achievements, and you can customize Gunvolt with a various amount of skills.

Basically, this is a fun game, and, along with other recent releases like Shovel Knight and Freedom Planet, is giving me hope that old-school gaming is on the rise again. It's definitely worth a look, for only $15 on the 3DS eShop, and if you buy it before November, you get a neat little bonus...

I've actually thought about picking this game up at some point might pick it up before November too get that nice bonus. Also my 3DS really needs a new game to play badly I haven't played anything on the 3DS in a long time.
I haven't really looked into much but what does it play like? (I know its a 2D game thats as far as my knowledge goes).

Closest comparison to any game I've played would be Megaman X, but the common comparison is to the other series Inti Creates have worked on: Zero and ZX. If you've played those, that's more or less what to expect here, with its own psychic powers of course. It even has a wall kick ability in it.

Then it sounds like something I would love to play totally. I loved the daylights out of the MegaMan X series Pretty much its like a spiritual successor to the MegaMan X, Zero and ZX series. (I might pick it up this weekend if I can).

I plan on getting it after I get my Wii U this month. Looks too good to pass up for my 3DS library. That and the offer.

This looks a LOT like the Mega Man Zero series. I played the first Mega Man Zero game, and enjoyed it. I never picked up the last few. I have a 3DS, so I should pick this up. I've been putting off picking up Shovel Knight as well.

I really need to start supporting these types of games, since I love 2D platformers so much. I just have such a huge backlog, and my retro game collecting isn't helping that at all.

I've been putting off picking up Shovel Knight as well.

Well stop that. :P

Shovel Knight is also immensely recommended, more so than Gunvolt in my opinion, but both are high-quality games you shouldn't be missing out on if you're a fan of 2D platforming.

Well I couldn't get the game this weekend, I had to take most of my money that I had to help get my mother some new glasses... Oh well maybe I can get it next week.
