Direction Control Issue/Bug?

When I start any quest, my guy walks up almost as if the up button were stuck. I have no control of the direction. I have tried reassigning the movement directions to different buttons, but it hasn't helped. I'm using Linux Mint 16. I'm not sure if that matters. Can someone please help me?

Just to be clear, the player moves up permanently, or just a few tiles?

You're using a keyboard, yes? Is there any gamepad plugged in?

The player moves up permanently. Also I'm using a keyboard because the program doesn't seem to recognize my gamepad. However, I've downloaded the program on my Windows laptop and everything works fine, including the gamepad. But that laptop is falling apart and needs to be put out of its misery.
