View Full Version : The Random Quote Guessing Game

07-12-2013, 09:47 AM
Its simple. Post a random quote you've encountered (IRL, on the net somewhere, doesn't matter) in your post. It can be any length, though try to not to get to crazy with it. The person after you has to quess where its from. If they guess correctly they can post the next quote (after you've confirmed it to be correct). Only 1 quote at a time please. If you wish to make it more challenging, you can blur/crossout/whatever names of places in the quote. (ie: It's a me, ____!) You are free to offer hints at any point from the first post of your quote to when its correctly guessed.

[edit]: New Rule. If at least a week goes without any correct guesses for your quote, you may reveal the answer and pick a new one until somebody guesses it correctly.
[edit2]: Another New Rule. If your quote is correctly guessed and the person who guessed it fails to post a quote of their own within at least 2 weeks time, you may either post a new quote or opt not to (in which case I will provide a new quote)
I'll start.

"If _____ threatens you with nukes, listen to what he has to say."

It's a longshot, but maybe the Deadpool videogame?

mrz84
07-19-2013, 01:04 AM
No. It is from a video game though, or at least one player's view on a certain NPC controlled character in this popular, long running series of games.

Chris Miller
07-19-2013, 01:55 AM
"If Gandhi threatens you with nukes, listen to what he has to say." from the game Civilization.

mrz84
07-19-2013, 09:17 AM
That is correct! You get to post the next quote for people to guess. Do so at your leisure and provide hints as you see fit.

Chris Miller
07-19-2013, 01:52 PM
"no one is here but a church bell will ring."

Chris Miller

...I suppose one could always thrust his way through the door.

Chris Miller
07-25-2013, 04:22 PM
...anybody? lol

mrz84
07-25-2013, 06:08 PM
I would, but I want other people to try really. Its no fun if only a few people get to pick the quotes.

Also, added a new rule to the first post for situations like this.

CJC

"no one is here but a church bell will ring."
Had absolutely no idea, so I cheated and used mighty Google!

It's from Zelda II, the Adventure of Link. Actually, it's a hint in the town of Mido that tells the player how to gain access to a locked building, wherein they can learn the down-strike.

I don't think I found that secret, but then again I did really poorly in Zelda II, so such is to be expected.

EDIT: I won't post one until it's been verified that I am correct.

Chris Miller
07-25-2013, 09:34 PM
Google is quite correct. :p

CJC
07-25-2013, 10:09 PM
Okay... let's see how this quote does:

"But I didn't hate my mother, it was an accident!"

If you are stuck, Google WILL give you the answer. That's the only hint you'll get!

mrz84
08-26-2013, 11:46 AM
Right. Nobody's answered for too long so I'm gonna say it.

Gomez from Addams Family to Dr. Pinderschloss.

Gandhi, without a doubt. :3

I'm pretty sure that last one was an old pirate saying. :D

"Nuts!"

BtjCraft
01-08-2014, 08:16 PM
I think that quote was probably said by more than one person.

But I identify the quote from the movie Uncle Buck, Miles said it as a euphemism(that language arts class has really jammed lots of vocabulary into my head).

Goriya

Professor Gunther Schultz, Final Fantasy XI.

"I swim in memories of a place such as this. Most unpleasant memories."

mrz84
10-06-2014, 05:42 PM
FINALLY somebody got that one.

I'm adding a new rule (which I will also add to the inital post) - If nobody has correctly guessed your quote after 1 week's time, the current winner picks a new one. [EDIT] - nevermind, I forgot I added that rule months ago...

TheDarkOne
10-07-2014, 02:10 PM
So...does the mean the quote I posted does not count?

mrz84
10-07-2014, 03:05 PM
No. I forgot I made the rule entirely, so I'll allow it. And because I don't wanna hog all the fun.

TheDarkOne
10-08-2014, 03:57 PM
Okay, then, I will reiterate.

"I swim in memories of a place such as this. Most unpleasant memories."

TheDarkOne
10-29-2014, 10:31 PM
I guess nobody is going to get this one. It was Viconia DeVir from Baldur's Gate II (she also appears in the first one, but only says this line in the second).

So let's try a less obscure one:

"I like this kinda stuff. Bombs and monitors...you know, flashy stuff."

TheDarkOne
11-09-2014, 01:06 PM
Is nobody playing this game anymore? I won't post here again until I know if anyone is still interested. And that quote is still open if anyone wants to try to guess it.

TheDarkOne
11-19-2014, 12:52 PM
Finally! By the rules, your turn to post a video game quote, harryrappe

TheDarkOne
02-01-2015, 02:17 PM
Looks like this game has been forgotten...a shame, really, it seemed interesting.

mrz84
02-01-2015, 10:27 PM
I added another new rule to the first post. Hopefully it will encourage more people to play (or not, we'll just have to see won't we?)

TheDarkOne
02-02-2015, 02:18 PM
Well, going by that new rule....

"I am the one they call when things go wrong. And things have indeed gone wrong."

This is from a movie, by the way, not a game.

TheDarkOne
04-16-2015, 12:46 PM
Over two months without a reply. This game is dead.

mrz84
04-17-2015, 07:34 PM
I've known the answer, but have held back and wanting to let others try (because like I've said before, its more fun if others than myself get all the answers).
However, as I like this game (and to maybe bring more activity to this part of the forum) I'll answer it. The quote is from Lilo and Stitch, from Mr. Cobra Bubbles to be exact (I haven't watched this movie in years but still remember that line as its one of my favs, but now I'm getting off track)

TheDarkOne
04-18-2015, 01:27 PM
By the game rules, it is now your turn to post a quote.

mrz84
04-18-2015, 02:23 PM
"Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it." Hopefully not too hard, nor too easy. :kitty:

Jareth to Sarah, in response to her saying "that's not Fair"
Correct, from the movie Labyrinth. By the rules of the game, it is your turn to post a quote, superstarashad.

TheDarkOne
08-21-2015, 12:36 PM
Well, since the requisite two weeks have passed, I will make an attempt to revive this.

"I hired you to help me start a war. It's a prestigious line of work, with a long and glorious tradition."

PinkFairy

The Princess Bride. Vizzini says this to Fezzik when Fezzik seems troubled by the idea of killing the princess.

"Where were you twenty years ago? Ten years ago? Where you when I was one of those innocent young maidens you always come to? How dare you come to me now, when I am this?"

TheDarkOne

I know this one but I'm going to see if anyone else in interested in this before I answer.

mrz84

The Last Unicorn, if I'm not mistaken (I haven'twatched that movie in forever so I'll wait to post my question until confirmation is...confirmed)

PinkFairy
09-02-2017, 01:58 PM
Your answer is correct. However, I rewatched that movie after posting that quote and I realize I kid of shortened it. I guees that happens posting from memory. Oh, well, after further review the play stands as called.

mrz84
09-05-2017, 08:04 PM
"Darker than a moonless night. Hotter and more bitter than hell itself, that is coffee."

The only hint you shall get is that its a game quote.

TheDarkOne
09-19-2017, 12:10 PM
I know that's Godot from one if the Phoenix Wright games, but I don't know which one. I only know it because my friend says this about coffee all the time so I asked him where it came from.

This is also from a game: "I will not rest until I wreak vengeance for my father!"

That would be Seigfried from Soul Edge (or Soul Blade as the PlayStation version has it).

Nobody, from nothing (since you didn't post a quote).

mrz84
10-15-2017, 11:33 PM
I was waiting for confirmation on my post. Once I get a confirmation, I'll post a quote.

TheDarkOne
10-16-2017, 06:33 PM
I didn't post it so I can't officially confirm it, but you are correct.

mrz84
11-15-2017, 02:04 PM
Time to perform some nercomancy and revive this thread! (It's kinda my job to keep things interesting around here)

"What? Won me over!? In your dreams, Grungelord McStubble!"

Your only hint: video game

PinkFairy
12-17-2017, 03:15 PM
Since the required two weeks have passed and nobody has answered, I am going to post a quote:

"So you're saying the other guy saved my life? That's a nice sentiment. Saved it for what?"

TheDarkOne
01-04-2018, 02:18 PM
That was from the Avengers. Bruce Banner speaking to Tony Stark.

"I knew they'd pick me! I just knew it!"

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Arthur Dent confirming that he does in fact have his towel with him.

"There's a shortage of perfect breasts in this word. It would be a pity to damage yours."

mrz84

Pretty sure that's from The Princess Bride.

If it is and I'm correct, here is my quote: "This world does not exist purely for you to get around. The world already exists, and you are a foreigner who has to find ways around and ways to survive."

Hint: Youtube gaming

TheDarkOne
05-17-2018, 12:22 PM
Looks like nobody is going to get that one, and I don't know it either.

"You had to come down here with an attitude, acting all big and bad. And what the hell is that SMELL!?"

PinkFairy
06-04-2018, 11:48 AM
Independence Day, Will Smith's character (I don't remember his name) talking to the dead alien he's dragging along behind him.

This ins't a single quote, but a conversation:

"Forgive me, Your Highness! I did not see you!"
"Your aim would suggest otherwise."
"And, for that, I know I must die."
"Oh, then...then speak of this to no one and I shall be lenient."

TheDarkOne

Is that from a movie? It's part of a quote from philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca but I don't know of any movie where it is used

mrz84
08-18-2018, 10:37 AM
It is indeed Lucius Annaeus Seneca, but its not used in any movie to my knowledge (which in Random Quote Guessing Game, the quote can come from any source, not just movies. I put that in the first post all the way back when it was started) Anyway, since you guessed it you get the next quote.

PinkFairy

Is anyone even still playing this? Well, that was from The Last Unicorn.

I'm going to post one on the off-chance that someone will play.

"Well, a little rain never hurt anybody."
"Yeah, but a lot can kill you."

mrz84
02-12-2019, 05:59 PM
Jumanji. The Robin Williams original.

I've not touched this thread primarily to encourage others to guess the quotes, because it would be boring if I was the one who got it every time. That and being sucked into Stardew Valley and Subnautica.

Anyway, for the quote I got this one I've been saving for a while.

"And so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."

TheDarkOne
02-13-2019, 01:04 AM
I've read The Great Gatsby I don't know how many times. You'll have to do better than that.

"To kill me, you would have to become solid. And when you become solid, you can be broken."

This is going to be a tough one unless you're familiar with the source.

EDIT: I didn't have that exactly right. The lines reads: "To kill me, you would first have to become solid. And when you become solid, then you can be broken." Still, close enough IMO.

PinkFairy

A month has passed with no answer. The quote is from "Bright Lights, Big City." I have not seen the movie so I can't give context, but I remember that line from the promos when the movie opened.

"Well, you know, you can live on it, but it tastes like sh*t."

PinkFairy
06-19-2019, 10:53 PM
Seems like it's just you and me playing this game....

That line is from "Crocodile" Dundee, and it said twice. Once when Mick is cooking some animal in the outback of Australia, then again when Sue gives him a hotdog in New York.

"I just want you to feel you're doing well. I hate for people to die embarrassed."
