View Full Version : Burn Flag Stopped Working?

Yesterday I started a quest that was running very well, and I was able to figure out how to set up a burn flag to burn a tree barricade on three separate screens. It worked fine. When I saved the game in zelda-w.exe, however, new files would start with the trees burned. This isn't the issue I'm addressing, but I think they are connected.

Because of this, I started a new quest, replicating the old one from memory. I'm at the tree I want to burn, but despite it being a different combo from the others, it doesn't work. It's already burned when I enter the screen for the first time - much like it was in my old and now deleted quest. I re-extracted the Zelda Classic files and cannot fix this.

I think I'm doing the same setup I had last time, but I'm not sure. I've included a few pictures, if anyone knows what I'm doing wrong please let me know. I've looked up everything I can and am tired of getting automated responses of how simple it is to maneuver the program. I need help from an actual human being who can understand what my problem is.

This is my ZQuest editor screen. (http://i.imgur.com/7CEI55j.png)
This is the Edit Combo screen of Combo 80 (the tree to burn). (http://i.imgur.com/nxU86kl.png)
This is the screen using the "flag filter" or whatever it is - just to show that only the one tree is meant to be burned. (http://i.imgur.com/pqeuzvz.png)
This is the Secret Combo screen, showing that all forms of burning will replace the tree with a ground tile. (http://i.imgur.com/ClpU2pF.png)
This is just to show the difference between the two types of trees, despite them having the same sprite. I know this isn't the problem because I had it like this before. (http://i.imgur.com/TZoCGkQ.png)
Again, to clarify, this is the burnable tree. Combo 80 as opposed to 81. (http://i.imgur.com/py5DT9X.png)
This is what I see every time I enter the screen for the first time in the actual game. (http://i.imgur.com/OR9Q59S.png)

I am pretty sure I have done everything the same. I've tested with different boxes checked and unchecked, but there has been no progress. The *only* thing I can think of that was different was that the old game used a red candle and this one uses a blue candle. The old game had flag 73 set, or whatever the one is for Red Candle+ burning. Although I don't see why there were no problems until I hit SAVE in the game and tried to start a new one. Please help.

If you think you've stumbled upon a bug in ZC, please post it in the bug forums.

When your file in ZC has a number on the screen that is greater than 0 and the game, when you press A to go to the quest load screen says "empty game", then your quest has not been played.
if you save the game in ZC like you said, it stores a file that remembers the data of the different screen flags you have triggered while playing the quest in ZC.
What you described here sounds like someone starting a ZC game that works fine, saving it, reloading the save file, and calling it's saving capability a bug...
I am certain there isn't anything wrong with the burn flag. If you register a different file, load the quest into a newly registered file, then play the game from there are the bushes there?

I think I see what you're doing. You don't need to change the flag on the combo itself to burn. As long as you have the "burn trigger" flag on the grid spot where the bush is that's sufficient. Then, as you've done, set your "burn trigger" tile in secret combos to what you want it to be after you burn the bush. I think having the flag on the grid and on the bush combo may be confusing things. Plus if you do what I think you're doing when you burn one bush they will all change to the burn trigger tile which I'm sure is not what you intended. Try taking the combo flag off the bush tile and just setting the flag on the grid square and see what happens.
