Shop problem

Whenever I enter my shop from the overworld, after the merchant finishes talking the game will freeze. If I don't have a string for the shop, it works fine, but I'd really like the merchant to tell me to buy something or go away.
Can someone please help me on this one?

Not sure if this matters either - but a small green and brown triangle appears to the right of the merchant after he finishes talking.

That triangle sounds like the game is waiting for gamepad input to dismiss the text box.
