Welcome to the new quest screenshot thread! You know the drill. I guess I'll start us off with some random crap I have lying around. The first two are from quests I haven't finished yet, and the last two are from Depressive Donuts: I Hate Mayonnaise 2 (http://www.purezc.com/index.php?page=quests&id=319). I'm aware the subscreen in the first shot sucks -- it's not finished and it's there for functional purposes rather than aesthetic ones.

http://www.purezc.com/Quests/q319s2.gifhttp://www.purezc.com/Quests/q319s4.gif
And this isn't really a screenshot, per se, but I'm posting it here anyway. (http://lz.rosenthalcastle.org/zelda/motm31.png)

If you're looking for the old thread, it's right here (http://armageddongames.net/showthread.php?69667-Post-screenshots-of-your-quests-here-1-0). (I guess technically this is at least the third thread, since apparently there were screenshot threads like this even before the last one. I guess the first one was 0.5 or something. Whatever.)

Let me be the first to reply to this thread

--------

These shots all come from my WIP quest, Zelda's Last Wish.

http://i852.photobucket.com/albums/ab87/seastorm044/zelda031.png
A shot of a section of Death Mountain. Since a L2 Peahat was planned for ZC, I decided to add it in myself (not scripted, btw).

http://i852.photobucket.com/albums/ab87/seastorm044/zelda030.png
Another shot of a section of Death Mountain. These new enemies are called Seraphs and they behave like Keese/Bats. The L2 Seraphs (these are L1 Seraphs) are nigh-impossible to kill with the Wooden Sword thanks to a nasty trick I found involving tribbles...

http://i852.photobucket.com/albums/ab87/seastorm044/zelda033.png
This many Darknuts in Level 3? MADNESS! :V
In all seriousness, they are easy to kill with Bombs or Spin Attack. You will be seeing many more in Level 3.

http://i852.photobucket.com/albums/ab87/seastorm044/zelda032.png
Camofols, another custom enemy. Just watch out for their nasty habit of turning invisible!

Okay, I get it. I'm new to this site, but I'm also on PureZC.

Here's some shots from my first quest, "The Islands of Zelda":
http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/4984/zislands46.pngBeginning Title Screen

http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/331/zislands13.pngEach main island has an info shop. Go there to learn about that island and if you need hints for secrets (such as maze paths) in that area.

http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/724/zislands12.pngSome islands are more civilized than others. This one even has a harbormaster!

http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/4619/zislands52.pngI wonder where that ship goes?

http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/9715/zislands49.pngHaving not found Zelda on the overworld, Link journeys to the underworld.

I think I'll post some links later...

Please ignore the lack of detail in this screen. I am more interested in criticisms of the palette. As in choice of colors. What you see here is the Death Mountain of Souls of Wisdom 2. The explanation of this version of Death Mountain is that after Link defeated Ganon in Souls of Wisdom, he wished to the Triforce to destroy the Dark World. However, a piece of the Dark World got pulled into the Light world in Death Mountain, giving a Dark world spirit without the evil eerie feeling. I call this palette Twilight Winter. Criticisms please.

If you ask me, feel like the pink shade on the ground are too bright. I think the mountains might be a little too bright as well.

These are from a currently unnamed, and surprisingly fast-moving spur of the moment project of mine. I'm going for a particular aesthetic here, and I realize some people will hate it, but if you are a fan of ZC quests with graphics inspired by Chinese pirated SNES/ NES carts, than this is the quest for you :D. The trees, and house interior walls are custom. A few other things here and there are custom too. This is probably the most spriting I've ever done, and since I'm not the best spriter, that is also a reason for the artistic direction. If you are curious, dungeons will still use the traditional Zelda perspective.

I don't want to say lol. On one hand it looks weird like those pirated SNES/NES games (and that was your goal, so props to that). But on another hand it looks unique and different and something I'd give a whirl when it comes out. Good work Anthus, keep it up!

I really do like your style. It has an elegant simplicity to it.
Your Link, however, does not fit. You need to adjust his palette to give him more contrast (Make his face brighter, and his hat and tunic darker), or else he blends too severely with the background. I couldn't even see him in the first image before squinting.

EDIT:
Majora
That screen is a jaw-dropper. Wow.

NewJourneysFire
It's a nice shot, but I agree with Phazite. You need to thin out some of the salmon from the palette.

Lightwulf
Your neoclassic tileset is great! I especially like the townsfolk.

trudatman
You already know how I feel about Sticks and Stones. That style is so unique it's mind-blowing.

Seastorm
Those classic shots are nice, but I like your gameboy stuff better.
Also, is that a lava zora in the first screen?!

Rambly
Your palette is awesome. And I don't know what you're talking about, the sub-screen on the first shot rules!

What a lovely shot Anthony. The only problem is how symmetrical and clashing all the tiles are. I recommend using less stone path tiles, adding some flowers and get rid of the middle pond like area.

Most of the time I see a nice screen its just a mock up screen. Its nice to see a screen that's actually being used in a game.

Ventus: Wonderful screens! They are balanced with good flow and vibrant, matching colors. I really dig the winter palettes!

Shane: Wonderful usage of the tileset. However, I do not enjoy the cactus being at the top there. Otherwise, I do want to say it's something I've seen already, but it's just well designed. The mountain spacing and colors is very elegant.

Now something I've been working on.

Thanks for the comment Furion, this screen is a transition screen between two areas so this explains why there are cactus growing along side with the pines. This area is also the starting area, we don't want to go to bonkers with creativity here, but trust me, we have some creative plans for the later areas.

Nice screen by the way Furion, I like the fungi, it gives the area some personality.

Great shot, Ventus. My only complaint(besides the hideous subscreen) is next to the well detailed grass the plain ground looks odd. A few bits of dirt or rock will do wonders. Some might criticize it as being too square but I'm not pretending the tileset isn't made for squareness.

Lynker, may I put forward a challenge? I want you to make a solid DoR screen using no custom tiles or palettes. This screen as well as a lot of your recent work just feels like it's using custom stuff as a crutch rather than a supplement. I think maybe if you designed your screens with default DoR tiles first and then swap them out for the custom ones later your screen design would improve immensely. When you have a huge-ass custom tile showcase going on it's easy to overlook nonsensical stuff like that random dirt to sand transition in the middle of a grassy field. I feel I should also add that MC moblins don't work at all when shrunk to 16x16 pixels. They just look silly.

I really like this. If I might suggest something, close your corners ahem, I mean put something to spice up that bottom row of tiles and widen up the one tile wide spots (maybe put some trees below that square of bushes?). One tile wide spots really suck on screens with shooting enemies.

Yeah, I know the ground is quite bare. This was a test shot to see how well I can work with New first.

No! Nonononono! This is what happens when we don't have the cross out text font option. I wasn't actually serious about the open corners thing. I was just joking. Open corners haven't caused problems since 2.5 allowed enemies to walk in them with a quest rule. Some people just have trouble moving on...

This is a nice screen and all but it isn't nearly as good as the last one(which I noticed you removed). It loses the simplicity of the last image. The top corners are cluttered and the bottom edge of the screen is plain. Your grass detail is still nice besides that strange V shape in the bottom right. Where your last screen was nearly perfect in it's simplicity this one is highly flawed.

Well I was trying to make the screen seem less empty. Maybe I went Over board? Anyways, I may take it back how the last one looked,
Which it is odd how Photo bucket deleted the one from before. Probably shouldn't have named the new one the same name as the old one <_<.

Yeah I thought about how the tileset doesn't get used that much. And I was like what the hell. Lets do this!.
And about the extended tree, I think I have use the tiles wrong there. I think is a tile that was made that would look better.

Do you see the stump in the middle of the grass, there? It's from A Link to the Past. Whereas the rest of your tiles are Newfirst interpretations of various gameboy resources. Having spent a lot of time with Newfirst in my first (failed) quest attempt, I can tell you a little something about tile compatibility... you need to make sure the the 'angle with the viewer' matches from tile to tile.

In three-dimensional spatial graphing terms, the ALttP tiles form a small phi angle of roughly 8 degrees. That means that the game is almost exclusively top-down. Comparatively, the tiles from the gameboy games form a phi angle of roughly 30 degrees, meaning the camera is placed lower in the perspective and thus images are foreshortened on the top. You can clearly see this with the 'cake' mountain tiles, as the backside is much shorter than the front.

When you cross images that were designed for different camera angles, their differences become magnified. In this shot, the stump appears to be 'popping up' in the back, because it is not foreshortened like the other tiles on the screen.

To make this point more clear, let's look at bigjoe's screen.
http://i.imgur.com/J3Mye.png
Notice how the mushrooms appear to stand at the same angle as the trees? It makes them fit better with the rest of the tiles and thus reduces the amount of visual focus on them. They match.

What I recommend is finding the GB graphics version of a stumped tree, from the Oracles series, or creating a custom stump using one of the GB trees as a base.

Uh, Moosh, you do know tiles are meant to be used, right? The new tiles are used to enhance the game. Not just for them to be there. Your argument makes it sound like that I have to use classic for it to look good.
This is the worst advice I have ever heard.

You misinterpret my meaning. The tiles are fine, but they blind you to the most basic flaws in your screen design. Just try building your screens in regular DoR without the custom content first and I think you'll understand what I mean. The custom tiles draw your eyes away from the rest of the screen making it much harder to spot logic and perspective mistakes.

To be honest, if it's unwise to use custom tiles, then how would have these wonderful tilesets such as Dance of Remembrance be made in the first place? =P

For starters, the screen feels really topheavy. Almost the entire top half of the screen is unwalkable. Screens like this can work when used in moderation, but I felt I should point that out. As long as you aren't doing this everywhere it should be fine. Also looking at the player's pathing options, this screen really encourages edge hugging. Might wanna keep that in mind too. I made a "tutorial" about screen flow and stuff (http://www.purezc.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=53929&st=0). Mainly just my design philosophy. Feel free to accept or deny the stuff I say there. Not claiming any of this as solid fact.

Now let's examine those mountains. First of all, there's a tile error in the bottom left corner with the mountain backs. It should be only half a tile of mountain, not a full tile. Looking at the tops of the mountains, I see a big strip of empty tiles on the top left side of the screen and a big strip of detail on the bottom left. It just doesn't look natural to me. Real life mountains don't have screen borders and as such real life rocks aren't aware of screen borders. Realism? Not so much. Another conditional thing I'd like to add is that if either of those ledges are accessible you need to clear up some space and give them some sort of purpose. Otherwise I'll assume they aren't.

Looking at the ground there's the dirt to sand transition which I believed I've already covered. There's also the transition between the grass and the mountain on the bottom left section of the screen. The grass overlapping the mountain just looks really strange and messes with the perspective. IDK if that's a DoR default thing but I'd recommend changing it. The grass in relation to the castle is also very strange. It overlaps the castle on the horizontal sections, but not the diagonals or the base of the rightmost tower.

Finally, moving on to the castle tiles themselves there's a nasty perspective clash between the towers and the walls. The towers appear to have a more top-based perspective than the walls and don't even get me started on how it doesn't fit next to those DoR mountains. I think it would fit much better with gameboy perspective mountains. Maybe that last part's just me.

I remind you that you asked me to do this.

Looking good, but I think you should improve the mountain to water transitions to be less square and the greens in the palette should be less vibrant IMO. Screen itself looks solid. Not sure you want criticism on that. Are those shells walkable? If not, you might wanna remove the one under the mountain overhang.

Moosh, I believe your opinion in the castle screen was a little too picky. I mean, sure, it is top heavy, but sometimes a screen like that is needed to make an overworld seem more like a world than an patterned jigsaw puzzle. I have at times made many top heavy, bottom heavy, and side heavy screens in my time, as long as I know there are many screens that are fully walkable.

I personally think the screen is beautiful amd perfect, I wouldn't change it for the world, but of course balance it out with walkable screens.

Perfection. I love you. D;

The colors are amazing (And fit the area), and the screen design works nicely. Though the shell on the mountain looks a bit strange, it also looks nice. The trees are also wonderful. A+

There is almost no room to walk on the top of the screen, which could make the player feel crammed (And for me, worried. :P)
I'd made the ladder just a straight mountain. It will help let the screen breathe.

Also, close the corners man! Close 'em! :P

I know this is pretty much an old post but I might add my two cents in regardless.

Now let's examine those mountains. First of all, there's a tile error in the bottom left corner with the mountain backs. It should be only half a tile of mountain, not a full tile.

I understand that, and I honestly blame myself for that. The way I designed the water tiles for Jared forced him to do that. But I consider what perspective he is using is "MC perspective".

Real life mountains don't have screen borders and as such real life rocks aren't aware of screen borders. Realism? Not so much.

With that kind of logic I could ask why are there enemies in quests? Because that's not realistic. Why does Link have three hearts? Because that's not realistic.

Finally, moving on to the castle tiles themselves there's a nasty perspective clash between the towers and the walls. The towers appear to have a more top-based perspective than the walls and don't even get me started on how it doesn't fit next to those DoR mountains. Well, they aren't really many castle tiles that fit LttP's perspective. And honestly changing the mountains to GB perspective is going to destroy some of the awesome mountains structure he has going on in other screens.

Not sure you want criticism on that. Are those shells walkable? If not, you might wanna remove the one under the mountain overhang.

Thanks, I'll be sure to work on it in the future, but right now, it works. Shells aren't walkable, so I'll be sure not to place a seashell near an edge of a screen next time lol.
EDIT: Thank you too, Lynker. =)

I really like all of those shots. Some of them you've showed me before. How far a long is your project?Right now, it's in a unplayable state. At the moment, the castle map is completely done. There are screens here and there. I wanna create the graveyard, village and a bit of the field that connects to the castle and village. Why? I got a demo coming up featuring all those areas. And who knows? Maybe a bit of the central dungeon too.

Oh GOSH. YEARS ago. At least 4.

I WAS impressed that there was ways to set shortcuts and stuff, but the quest I was working on kinda fell apart when I couldn't even get a basic intro cutscene to work. I found a script for that, but it didn't work. :s

I wouldn't mind picking up Zquest again someday, but even if I do I'll have to wait until I finish my second RPG. I've got too much started to put it aside now. :P

I really do hope I can get my Quest done someday though. The story is pretty nifty (Doesn't involve link at all. It's a younger brother saving his older brother from a pirate gang after they get shipwrecked).

Remember that giant temple entrance? Yeah:

http://i.imgur.com/PEDHXcM.png

Basically, this is a part-intro-part-final dungeon. The first visit is a simple climb up; the side doors present on most floors are locked and the blocks in the middle are deactivated so you can climb up fast and without having to do anything tedious. The second (and final) visit is when the dungeon begins to turn into a final dungeon; the blocks are activated and the doors on the sides open forcing you to go through a series of trials on each floor.

This is a project I started late last year. "THe False Princess"

basically, Zelda has not been acting herself, and Link needs to find out what's up. It gets way epic though, and the project is currently into Overworld 2, a vastly-aged version of Alttp's map. the last few screens are all of and around the East Palace.

Ok I didn't know that, I'm not really a forum guy, I browse but rarely post unless I have something to contribute, which I actually did this time :P

Also, I enjoy playing with layering. The first thing I did when setting up the overworld map was dedicate the next six maps to layers and auto layered them, so every screen of the overworld has a full set of layers to use if I need to. A few of the screens I posted used all layers 0-6. It uses a lot of maps just for one DMap, but it looks great.
