This is an older article, but I found it interesting to hear someone actually talk about Mario's design over the years

http://nfggames.com/games/mariosprites/

he still forgets to discuss SMB Mario's weird eyes... L-L

Interesting read. I liked how they actually put sprites side by side to give a nice way to compare them.

I used to want an avatar that was just Link walking back and forth in his varying stages of evolution. Nobody would make it for me though. :(

I've never seen the arcade version of Mario from 1983... but it's awesome. Way cooler than console Mario.

I saw this article some time ago. I really enjoyed it at the time. I love seeing these types of retrospectives. A Mega Man one would be cool but...Mega Man didn't change much during the 8 bit era.

What interests me the most is that they actually have something to say about the different incarnations. What worked for one, why we like another, etc. How the first kinda Mario sprite was there to get the point across, then the next kind was rounder and friendlier. That's interesting to me.

I feel the need to bring this up though, even though it isn't a sprite:

This was pretty neat. I have always enjoyed how game/characters visually evolve over time. :)

Woah! Way cool! I thought that was awesome, whoever put it together.

@King Aquamentus: Yep. Reminds me of the differences in the early drawings of Megaman, compared to what it has become!
