View Full Version : Goodbye, AGN.

It's with a heavy heart I write this post, but I want to get it out there before it's too late.

It looks like the writing's on the wall for AGN this time. We've been through booms and lulls before, but this one looks fatal. Low member count's nothing; if anything it makes it more intimate. However, the "attack site" status is a definite hurdle to new members, and it takes a lot of jumping through hoops to display the forums (or risk my computer using IE, which is what I had to do to make this post.) Now the spammers are taking over. Making this post was hard, not counting the emotional weight. I suppose Warlord's through with AGN, and I don't blame him. Looking back I can tell he probably quit having fun several years ago. I don't like being the guy to say the ship is sinking, but I've been doing my best to ignore it and pretend like AGN's been doing great for years now. Sometimes you just have to let go.

I want to clear up what I feel like is some bad blood before it goes. Back in my college days around '06 and '07 I remember I stirred up a lot of trouble. For some reason I've always felt like WL and Breaker didn't like me since then; if so it's all my fault and I apologize for that. I tried to shape AGN into something it wasn't and threw tantrums when I didn't get my way; if only I'd continued to let AGN be what it had been for me all along. Somewhere along the line I lost my way, and if it hurt anyone's feelings I'm sorry.

I'd like to offer to take the reins from WL (and I'm serious), but knowing my history I wouldn't put much effort into it and it wouldn't do anything but lengthen the delay until the active member count dwindles to 1. AGN would need an influx of new users and forums just don't really fill the niche they used to fill on the internet for teens. Back then we all had relatively slow modems so it was fine if threads moved at a rate of a few posts per hour. Today the age group that AGN needs so desperately is used to instant communication via phones and IM; forums are glacial. It's probably best to let it die, but that doesn't make it easier to let go.

Why even get this worked up about a forum? I've got a lot invested in AGN. The postbit says I joined in 2001, but my memories seem to support 2000 as a more likely date; I seem to remember some forum upgrade screwing up join dates a little bit? It's no matter. Ten years is a long time. I was 17; now I'm 27. Since joining I've found a girl, left home, graduated college, gotten married, and tried to carve out my place in the world. I didn't have many friends at school, and the few gamer friends I had moved away. AGN filled a social void in my life. Some of the best times of my teenage years were spent on AGN; perhaps that's a bit sad but many of the people who were doing more "appropriate" things back then aren't doing so well today. There's a lot of history on these pages, and a lot of awkward kids learning how to socialize in an environment where failure didn't have to mean being an outcast forever.

So there you have it. I'm a huge nerd and AGN + video games took the place of the circle of real friends a healthy teenager would have formed. Seeing this place go down is what it must be like to visit a childhood home, only to find it's been bulldozed and replaced. I keep coming back in the hopes that those years will return, but you can't go backwards in time. My wife is a member of a forum in a similar state, but when they started to collapse they shut down new membership and made it a very intimate and private ordeal; it's a kind of walled-in Facebook for them. I think I keep coming back because I want to have fun with AGN like she's having fun with her forum.

I'll miss this place and the people that made it great. I'm out of touch with almost everyone but Mottzilla these days. It's a real shame that I never stayed in touch with some of my best friends from my youth. If you want to get in touch with me, it's easy to find me. I'm Owen Pellegrin, I've groomed my search results well. Google my name and you'll get my profile which links to other services. If you're too lazy:

AIM: nopaeWamtA (I'm on most of the day; one of the benefits of working on software.)
Email: shouldn't be hard to guess at gmail.com. Following other instructions can turn it up pretty easy.
Twitter: @SittenSpynne

I'd really like to keep in touch with people. I've neglected my social life for a couple of decades now and it's really starting to hurt. Even if I don't know you very well you'll get a few minutes of conversation out of me before I decide if you're too obnoxious to keep on ;)

Here's a rough list of people from past years, with a few comments. A common theme: I never got personally friendly with many of you and now I regret it. Conversation on the forum is so much different than in private! It hurts more that it's been so long I have only vague memories of the time we spent virtually together.

Warlord: Thanks for running the site for so long. Sorry if I pissed you off. Maybe we can play CoD sometime; I see you on XBL a lot.
Breaker: You weren't that bad and I was a pretty big dick. Sorry about that.
Dark Nation: It's a shame I never really talked to you; I bet you're interesting. I'd really love to get in touch with you, maybe do a sort of fanboy "What's it like to be DN?" interview. I'm not embarassed to say it anymore.
Beldaran: Getting trolled constantly was pretty fun. It gave me something to do.
Big Joe: Haven't heard much from you in a while, hope you're doing great!
JJ Maxx: MIA forever! Hope things are going well.
Foxygrl: MIA as well :( I seem to remember you helping me with some rough times in IRC.
goKi: An AGN staple. Haven't heard from you in forever.
Masamune: You've gotten funnier with age, always looked forward to your posts.
Moocow: Another member that held the forums together. It's a shame I never got friendly with you.
Shadowblazer: One of my idols on the forums. Wish I was still in touch.
theplustwo: You're still my posting buddy and we still talk all the time so you don't get a special mention. Wait.
TSA: I more or less know where you ended up and that I don't think we'd have been very friendly off the forums anyway. Still doesn't change you're one of the original AGN MVPs and thus one of my original forum idols.
vegeta1215: It's been a long time since I remember talking with you but I seem to remember you being really cool in the past few years. I dunno why.
Zaphod: Another one of my old forum idols. I seem to remember you left on bad terms, but *I* never stay angry for long.
Eckels: We had a falling out towards the end but you were a cool guy and I was being a dick. Sorry.
Cyberkitten: It makes me very sad that I can't particularly remember any posts of yours but I do remember feeling a strong friendship.
fatcatfan: I really liked you. What happened was a shame.
Prrkitty: Where ya been? Your threads kept AGN alive for a long time.
Goatboy: Hilarious. Your comeback wasn't quite so good, but I could tell your heart wasn't in it.
Ganonator: I seem to recall having some great conversations, but memory is so vague!
Mottzilla: We still talk pretty much every day so no way are you getting a sappy, "I hope you talk to me" message!

I've still got the old member pages; here's a roll call of members that didn't make that list but I still feel were worth a mention. Some of these have been gone for at least 5 years, and many were among the original core group that made AGN so cool in the early 2000s :( Capitalization's going to be a mess because my files don't use it and some of you had *weird* names.
AegisRunestone, AlexMax, Brian, BritannianHero4, callitaday, DarkDragon, DarkJim, DarkPanther, DarkTemplar, Darunia, deathbyhokie, Dechipher, DrunkenTiger, EarthToAustin, ElementalKnight, Erasul, Fiyerstorm, Gerudo, GlennTheGreat, Glitch, Ibis, God of Magicks, ICHBINDASWALROSS, Inori, Jemsee, Jigglysaint, MANDRAG GANON, Master Ghaleon (you gay lion!), Mattwdr, me2, Menokh, MetaStaiford, MrCow, NerdWarrior, Obi, Pablo, Platinum, Predcon1, PrfectGREG, Queenie, Rainman, RaptorScyther, Rijuhn, Riverman, Sir Anthony the Dragonslayer, Smokin D Grass, Starkist, Teilyr, THe Savior, Tygore, Ultra22Lemming, Vel, Verman, XyVol, Yoshiman, Zeo.

That's just the ones that were in the member pages; I'm sure there's plenty I'm leaving out. Just because I didn't come up with a sentence for you doesn't mean your special; my memories of the past 10 years are just so faint. It's made me sad to compile this list and write this post, but it's probably my last chance to say anything to you guys.

Thanks for the good times, AGN. I'm really sad to see you go.

*edit*
In reflection I remembered I left out Tails/Jennifer, another early member that has persisted. An omission via bad memory, not purposeful. There's probably others. If you'd post maybe I'd remember!

When is the AGN forums gonna be fixed from being reported as an attack site?
Other than that, RIP AGN forums, you will be missed. *bawls*

I'm having to use an iPod touch to post this.

It's been a long time hasn't it? I think I've been a member here going on 11 years myself. I really enjoyed a lot of the discussions you took part in here at AGN Atma. Thanks for everything.

btw, I had forgotten about the Member Pages!

This is super depressing. Every couple a' months I come back to see if anything has changed, and every time it's worse and worse.
I'd give anything for this place to go back to how it was 10 years ago.

Yet AGN still persists. Interesting.

oh my god, look at my lame ass signature, and my avatar. Oh man, maybe this place should die.

Well, I'm pretty much where you're at. It was fun while it lasted. I don't have as much of an attachment to this place, because I joined PureZC first, and was mostly active there till around 2007, but still, if ZC's main site is going under, the I wonder what will happen to the program?

The way I see the shape that AGN is in right now, it makes me wonder if the stable 2.5 will ever get released, I'm not pressuring anyone to release it anytime sooner. I just hope AGN will start to shape up and fix that reported attack site and get everything cleaned up. It seems like that the captcha system isn't helping much especially spam bots are taking over AGN.

It just makes me sad to see that AGN forums is going down in the dumps. I do remember back in 2000-2006ish that AGN used to be more lively and posts were flowing by.

Please keep AGN alive!

I miss these forums.

AGN is what, in many ways, had helped me to mature. Zelda Classic was also my first "editor", the fuel to my first spark of creativity. Initially, I had come upon Zelda Classic and AGN around 2005. The community was wonderful, and very open to my discussions and suggestions. I had been a pretty silent kid prior to joining AGN, so in many ways I was still working to develop social skills without fear of being berated by my peers.

I also remember Shattered Earth. Shattered Earth had also been a very fun game, and I had loved being able to chat with some of the other AGNers in real-time. So much so that I had remade it from scratch (and, I actually still have it).

It's a shame that the virus hasn't been addressed. This place is so wonderful. I would give anything to see it come back to life again. Such creativity, such acceptance, is rare when searching through the bowels of the internet.

Why don't you just update the forums to the latest version, install re-captcha for registration, and delete all obvious spam posts by fake members? Seems simple enough to me.

[Edit1]
And for god sake, install a theme on this mofo!

[Edit2]
Also, install akismet to stop spam posts without having to do anything.

[Edit3]
Apparently akismet is built into vbulliten you only need to sign up for an api key here: akismet.com then in the admin interface go to settings > options > scroll to "spam management" and then choose Akismet and enter your key under "anti spam key." Click save and problem is solved.

The problem isn't a virus. Apparently, somebody with full access to the site is deleting things at random. Until that person is weeded out, fixing anything would be relatively pointless.

Remember that time I stumbled upon a Trojan? That was pretty cool. Haha.

Catch me on Facebook, guys. www.facebook.com/diffikolt (http://www.facebook.com/diffikolt)

I'll still be around. If there's anything I can do to help, let me know.

There's been a lot going on here at AGN as of late:
1. Spam bots have been attacking the site with their advertisements, and much of the senior staff has been inactive as of late.
2. This site has been hacked many times throughout the years.
3. The Private Messaging System is still broken as yet, and War Lord still has not done anything about it.
4. This site has been falsely labeled as an attack site.
5. This site has experienced other technical difficulties, such as internal server errors, and band-with limits being exceeded.
If this site and Zeldaclassic.com end up being shut down indefinitely, where do you think the ZC development team would have to host Zelda Classic? Would they have to establish a new web site to host ZC, or just host it at PureZC?

Yeah, in addition to that, I'm still hoping that the staff can find a way to fix the 404 error problem with the private messaging system.

Newspring is just a spam bot, and spam bots create these accounts for the only purpose of advertising. There's another spam bot in the Edibles and Tasty Stuff Forum, by the way.

There is talks between the devs in this regard.
I will not make any statements on this as it is not quite official yet. But let it be known the ZC WILL SURVIVE if AGN falls.

I've been dropping in from time to time (last couple of weeks I've been in here more often than usual), typing armageddon's address into my bar every couple of months. Yeah, I think it' s all over and done with, which, as you have all stated, is quite saddening.

I have been trying to drop in at least once a week for the past...2+ months. Once the virus alert started setting off my scanners, I decided to wait to see if things were fixed or if AGN was just in the final death throes. Sad, since I actually have use for a forum for something game related, but whatever. Now that everything seems copacetic again, I will do my best to clean up the spammers. If it looks like AGN will be up for a while, I may bring in a few new members since my village needs a place to chat and share info.

I can't believe it took me till now to figure out that the reason this thread remains so active isn't because it is about one person leaving the board. It's because it's about the board leaving that person's life. Against his will. He's simply leaving before it goes critical (duh, but point is, he's saying goodbye not cause he's leaving, but because AGN is dying.)

Over the years AGN was one of the sites I instinctively typed into my address bar without even thinking about it. I've visited this site so many times over the last ten years its a force of habit. But when I saw the virus warning a couple of months ago I knew it was the end for AGN.

Its been a good run. I'm glad the boards made it to ten years and I really enjoyed reading a lot of your posts. I'm sure I'll still check here every one in awhile while the boards continue to remain up, but I pretty much consider the boards dead at this point.

Thanks for a well-written goodbye, Atma.

I've never gotten an attack site problem...

Man, I probably haven't been around here in a year or more. This place was such a huge part of my life when I was in my mid-teens. Some of the coolest people I've met on the internet posted here. Now...I barely check in anymore. Its a bit melancholy, certainly.

The grand irony being that ZC is probably finally closer to a stable release then it has been since like 2008

Well AtmaWeapon sad to see ya go but I know exactly what you are saying. AGN for me years ago was my life. Always when I got home from work or when I woke up I always logged in to see whats going on. Made new friends on here and even dated a girl from here too! This place was the spot for me and then something changed. AGN used to be very active with members then all the sudden poof. I think what happened is the majority of AGN were young members and when they got older they stopped coming here. Either cause they got jobs or they got a gf/bf and didn't have time for AGN anymore. I used to be very active here but hell I got so many things I gotta get done in my life its somewhat hard for me to log in once in a while to see whats going on. About 95 percent of the people that I used to talk to here have vanished. It's a shame really.

Wow, names I recognize in this thread. I am amazed that people still pop in every now and again.

I was a 12 year old little twerp when I joined this group and now I'm 23, married, and I'm in college for video game design. People say time flies, but holy crap.

If there's anything that a classic member can do to help, just let me know. After all, I'm one of the few remaining members of The Order of the Phoenix - heh.

Same here. Except - I was engaged for a while, not anymore [all for the better]. I came here looking for RPG Maker 2000 tiles, found Zelda Classic - found it to be an amazing program. Still never completed a single quest [whether that be creating one, or playing a custom one]. Then I started up that fancy ol' Mage Point Question stuff [MPQ, yeah]. That got pretty interesting, especially when we started doing the Megaman forum battle stuff - a neat forum based pseudo battle system. Then the first incarnation of Shattered Earth came about, and I think I dated an imaginary person - granted I was like 14? That was definitely the weirdest part of my adolescence. [Only KJAZZ can really confirm whether hyper was real or not, really - fucking weird].

Then Shattered Earth shut down a few times, and I got a real girlfriend - [actually, I remember her and I playing it when it came back up for a while years later]. Anyway, then I got more and more into military re-enacting [considering I can't join due to an autoimmune disease I have], and as of the past few months I've really gotten into photography, which I am incredibly passionate about.

I still wonder what happened to some of the older members; Cyclone, TSA, Prrkitty, Eckels, etc.

I also stopped visiting once I kept receiving the attack site warning. I was just like...fuck it.
I dig what people say about this place and adolescence. I learned quite a few social skills on this forum, but mostly I just had fun. I was like 12 or 13 when I joined. That was over ten and a half years ago - which is insane. Quite literally, AGN has (somehow) been the most stable thing in my life over the last decade. While I don't want to just be like "I'm done with this place", I don't have the energy to put into something that no longer contains a natural draw for me. I think we had a good thing building up with Shattered Earth, but with me on a Mac it wasn't able to really go anywhere - not to mention I couldn't code and it was slightly difficult to get in contact with WL on moving forward with the project.
There are several people at this place that I've somewhat kept in contact with - CAD, MSU, and Masamune. There's a couple of other people I'm FB friends with but I forgot what their usernames were.

Seeing this place go down is what it must be like to visit a childhood home, only to find it's been bulldozed and replaced.
I'll have to admit, this is almost exactly what it feels like to me.

I joined way back in 2001 (mainly because of Zelda Classic), along with a bunch of other members. I was 12 back then and spent most of my awkward adolescence here (as evidenced by my username and early posts). I kind of drifted away around 2005-ish, if I remember correctly. I would pop in and post every now and then, but I slowly became a lurker and stopped visiting altogether.

I have to say though, out of every discussion forum I've been a part of, this is probably the only one where it felt like a family. A caustic and dysfunctional family at times, but a family. c:

Even if this place is just a husk of what it once was, the fact that it still exists is something I'm thankful for. Good times... even if it became more of a ghost town than it already is, I'd still be sadder if it wasn't here.

Then the first incarnation of Shattered Earth came about, and I think I dated an imaginary person - granted I was like 14? That was definitely the weirdest part of my adolescence. [Only KJAZZ can really confirm whether hyper was real or not, really - fucking weird].

Ohohohoho. I guess it's okay to spill the beans half a decade later, hmm? hyper is indeed a real person, a friend of mine. I'm pretty sure what happened in the beginning was that because he picked the White Mage avatar, other players wrongfully assumed he was a she, and then showered "her" with gifts. Deception was not his original intention, I'm sure, but he kept up the facade because hey, free virtual gold and equipment, right?

It seems strange to be mentioned in a post like this, I never really knew what kind of effect I have on people though a web forum. Then again, there are a lot of names in that list I have good memories of.

I think the fact that this site is still up and running says a lot about it, even though it may be sparsely populated. It hasn't faded into the void of the internet.

Just got here after over a year away and it is sad to see posts like this. But good to hear people are still checking in once in a blue moon. Almost like we're all wishing for it to become revitalized, knowing its probably not going to happen. I've met some good friends on here. You can all look me up on facebook under Darkflamewolf. Pretty easy to find me. Must give major shout out to Cbailey for being one of the most awesome testers I've ever had to work with. You can test my new and upcoming projects anytime buddy!

everything's relatively ok here, aside from spambot attacks. the Zelda Classic forums are still very active as they work to get everything fixed. did I mention the spambot attacks?

I even check the "Currently Active Users" at the bottom of the main page and I would be darned to see it go to the single digits.

I remember logging in here probably every day for about 6 years. It was when i moved out of home and didn't have Internet that my interest kind of dissipated. It's a shame. Like many of you, AGN was such a huge part of life. Will never forget travelling halfway across the world for the AGN convention in '05. That was a blast and i met a bunch of awesome people there. My life is nothing like it was back then, to most of you who haven't kept touch, I would seem like a completely different person. I guess in a few ways that is because I am.

Thanks for the shout out Atma. Hope your life is well and you've achieved what you had hoped so many years ago.
It's sad to hear what has happened to AGN and even though i don't visit much anymore, it will be a dark day when this place ceases to exist.

Good luck to everyone who's been here forever, those of you i still keep in touch with, look me up for a chat! Those of you who dont, i'd love to hear what's going on in your life:

e-mail: brentonjames at gmail dot com
facebook: www.facebook.com/bootman (make sure you say who from AGN you actually are in a message or something, or you may get ignored ;) )

Cheers for the memories AGN,
goKi.

Don't forget though, most of us were probably assholes too.

I mean this *IS* AGN.

Same here man. Though I know I could never reach the level of activity that I put in back when things were going strong, I do think it would be nice to be able to visit every once in awhile and find that something's going on. I'll have to make it a point to drop in more often...

I have been seeing a LOT of spambots lately! People advertise in their replies!

Who am I kidding? I find it hard to bring myself to maintain activity on my facebook let alone a forum where I have to use 4 of 5 attempts to remember my 5 year old password. I try though, I try.

My password apparently is secure and easy enough for me to remember still.

Mine hasn't changed since the old days when AGN still used UBB. :D

Mine hasn't changed is years. All my other passwords, however, have become more diverse and secure now-a-days because I now have things to protect like credit card numbers and I don't want every internet douche and spamlist to have my (important)email address. The amount of script-kiddies around these days is ridiculous. You can't upload a picture of your girlfriend to Photobucket without some /b/tard breaking in looking for blurry nudes.

Anyway every time I come back here I have to think which of my old passwords is the winner. Usually the problem is remembering how old the password is. I think the current one is 4 years old. Before that, I think, was the original I registered with.

Atma... thank you for the kind words hon <BIG hug> I hope life is being good to you and all is well. I've not traipsed thru here in quite awhile.... just needed to step away. MasterG got in touch with me a few days ago and told me SE might be back up and running again.

So here I am again :)

It's a miracle that I'm starting to see AGN back up to speed a bit.

Looks like AGN is going downhill right now. I wonder what has cause AGN to become almost dead.

Real lives would be the main culprit.

As I am in a good position to sit on my ass two weeks a month, hopefully we can start getting this place back in shape.
