Rode my bike to work today. About an hour later a co-worker noticed that the bike wasn't there. Called the police, they had me file an online report. So yeah, they're going to get right on that one. I figure at this point my best bet is to check the local homeless hangouts and pawn shops to see if I can spot the bike myself.

Yeah, that blows. I wish I could ride my bike to work, though I'm sure in the area I work in, I would have a similar problem.

I've had two bikes stolen at college.

Then I bought one of these. (https://www.kryptonitelock.com/products/ProductDetail.aspx?cid=1001&scid=1000&pid=1095). Zero problems. This lock is heavy fucking duty.

I think you should put a sticker on that lock and write "Thou Shall Not Steal"! That would teach them!

I like how the lock company turned the security of it up to 12. I guess since turning it up to 11 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbVKWCpNFhY) was already taken.

I've never had my bike stolen (yet), but I've had my car broken in to twice. It sucks. I hope your week goes better.

Well this story does have a happy ending. No, I didn't get my bike back. I've pretty much given up on that. Instead, my boss had an old bike he was trying to get rid of. So he decided to give it to me. Still need to replace the accessories I had on the old bike (air pump, tire levers, lock, etc), but you can't beat free.

Does your work not have any CCTV cameras?

Had my bike go missing on Marco Island, made the front page on the newspaper, the Eagle I think, turns out some bugger had hidden it in the bushes. A heavy duty lock would have been brilliant there..

If you want a lock that is better, go with a U-Lock. These often come with insurance programs by the lock company, and if you get an appraisal of your bike, register it with the police, a simple U-Lock for $40 can protect a bike up to $1000.

About those insurance programmes that come with some bike locks...read the fine print before buying. Or rather, do not buy a lock based on it's insurance programme. There are often too many hoops to jump through making it damn nigh impossible to ever complete a claim. I found out the hard way that most programmes require you to provide the busted/sawed lock to make a claim so if a thief does not leave your busted lock behind, no claim for joo. You also have to keep immaculate records of every aspect of your bike unless you are just going to claim for frame cost. I recommend Kryptonite U locks. They have a decent insurance programme but it's not worth the hassles and a properly used Kryptonite lock with thwart all but the most skilled and determined and well equipped (think power tools) bike thief.
