Irony is when the residents of your apartment complex are getting sketchy enough that you are worried about car burglary, so you move to nicer apartments in a luxury community with tons of amenities and lots of smug, snooty people. Then your car gets burglarized within 2 weeks of move-in and you find out this is a very common problem on the property. And none of the amenities work.

Irony is banning a spammer in an attempt to prevent him from using your forum from advertising, but neglecting to remove the links from his post or even put a rel="nofollow" in them.

So long as those links are visible and we're not explicitly telling search engines to ignore them, the spammer is accomplishing his goals of using AGN for free advertising. Sure, we're not clicking on the links, but search spiders are noting that AGN is linking to those sites multiple times and thus boosting their status in the index.
