I blame the education system. How did they get into this grade without being able to do basic math?

As an example of what I have to deal with...

3 2/13 x + 7 = -57 + 9 1/5 x

I ran into a student who could not solve this because they could not do any of the following:


Moving things across an equals sign (didn't know that you start by subtracting 7 from both sides of the equation and once this was explained, they tried to subtract 7 from both terms on the left side of the equation).
Combining like terms (they wanted to directly combine the x's with the constants).
Subtracting with negative numbers.
Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions.
2-digit multiplication.
Subtracting fractions with different denominators.
Finding the LCD of 2 fractions.
Prime factor trees (for helping to find LCM/LCM).
Rewriting a fraction with a different denominator.
Dividing by a fraction.
Converting an improper fraction to a mixed number.

That is pre-Algebra stuff according to Ohio's state curriculum. We did that kind of stuff in seventh grade.

Viewing this post, replying, and in complete bewilderment that 11th graders don't know how to multiply...2nd/3rd grade stuff now where I sub teach. It's understandable if the child is special ed that they might catch on later, but I am in complete shock they got that far in school Dark!

"No child left behind" becomes "all children lag behind". Our education system has seriously failed some of these kids. Or, conversely, maybe it *should* have *failed* them and made them repeat the grade until they got it right. I can understand not knowing how to do some of the more advanced things (such as matrices or the law of cosines), but for something fundamental like 2-digit multiplication... Sad.

How's that for an "I'm sorta back and I'm okay" post. Pretty much the most mundane thing I'm doing lately is watching awesome movies (Hancock, and about to see Inception, at you guys' recommendation.) and cutting keys for people. There's an actual locksmith across the street from the store I work in, and their keys suck. They go straight to me. Me. Specifically me, by name. It's a surprising amount of fun for some reason.
