Holy crap - another step towards our impending doom at the hands of our robot overlords. *shudder* It's just so utterly creepy...

Reminds me of this Jonathan Coulton song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xA0rZbo1sqM).

I love (read: am disturbed by) the way one of its eyes always seems a little more closed than the other.

That is wrong on so many levels. Go figure it's being made somewhere in Asia. Seeing as how the majority of these robots are being made over there, that will be the first place to go if robots managed to take over the world.

A robot can't outsmart a shotgun though so I still feel safe.

That was HIGHLY creepy, but kind of looked fake to me. Either way, creepy. If it is completely real, we are heading straight towards Terminator, ha ha.

0_0 Holy....

...That is just weird. Seriously. Why do we need to develop robots like this?

Humanity subconciously wants to destroy itself, and a real-life Terminator would be the coolest way to do it.

I dunno. A giant explosion that instantly destroys all of humanity and the planet itself sounds pretty cool too.

But Aegix, humanity craves drama. If everyone died instantly, nobody could write about it on æ (http://encyclopediadramatica.com/).

What!? Crap!? One of my prototypes got leaked! Damn...

I ...mean...yeah, what everyone else said. Creepy.

The primary reason why we are all so fascinated with robots is simple:

...to fulfill sick fantasies with robot animals. Yeah.

...Besides which,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32kZ9RzCoDs Is still the coolest looking real robot I've seen yet.

I'm sitting here thinking about it, and, is it really that difficult to design working robots? It doesn't seem like it's something that would be too hard, I mean, we definitely have the technology it seems. I'm not saying we SHOULD make robots, it just seems that everyone makes a big deal out of something that doesn't seem to hard to create given the proper knowledge and equipment. Neither of which I have, mind you.

Um, Link101, they do have working robots. My youtube link was right there. click.

Cuz a shotgun is the most effective most armor-piercing device on the face of the planet. That and they're just so damn cool

Seriously though, on the one hand robots are cool because it shows how far our technology has come along, but at the same time it shows our stupidity now that we've doomed ourselves to die in some kind of nuclear holocaust or otherwise die at the hands of our own creations. Just like GOD LOL.

Mechanically, robots are relatively simply to design, this is true. What you seem to be missing, however, is the most important aspect of robotics research, the design of artificial intelligence to control the robots, and that's infinitely more complicated. Being able to do the work of a human is one thing, but it'd be even better if we could design robots that didn't need human controllers. Sometimes it's not even possible to have a human control a robot.

This is why so much work went into making the robots we've sent to Mars autonomous - there's a 10-minute communication delay because Mars is so far. This makes it almost impossible for controllers here on Earth to steer around hazards, so the robots have to be able to see the hazards themselves and avoid them.

Another example - walking. A robot on legs can handle a much wider range of terrain than a robot with wheels. However, the robot has to be able to constantly track its center of balance and adjust accordingly to keep it from falling over, especially when the terrain gets rough - thus, advanced AI is needed to coordinate all that.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about, Bigdog - it takes a lot of advanced AI to do what it does.

I know that they have working robots, ha ha. I was just saying, it seems like big deals are made out of working robots when a new one is created. I now realize though, that recreating the workings of human movement through AI is probably extremely difficult. Not to mention the wiring to resemble nervous systems and such. So now I can see how it's a big deal.

Man, that thing is amazing! It's incredibly creepy though. In fact, I find that BIGDOG one creepier than the one this thread is about. It looks like something out of a survival-horror game or something. It's stability, balance and sense of awareness are phenomenal.

With all the eye twitching and "eeh eehh" sounds it's reminiscent of a down syndrome child.

It's still creepy though...like a down syndrome child. o_O

They can if there made out of indestructible materials.

That's what adamantium bullets are for.

Well technically that's not what they're for, but they'd work. O:
