I've messed around with ZQ a few times in the past, but always gave up because I didn't know how to do what I wanted to, and it always seemed like too much work. I've been playing with Zquest the past couple of days, and this is what I have to show for it. Nothing too difficult or fancy. I've only slightly modified some classic tiles, and threw in some overworld tiles I found over at PureZC. It's my homage to the first two Zelda games.
Once you get the blue candle, there are a few things you can do, but it's pretty much over.
some screenies:

Enjoy!

edit: There were some bugs in the dungeon making it unfinishable. After I fix them, I'll repost the demo.
edit2: Fixed.

edit3: If you get the big shield, it fucks with link's sprite tiles somehow. Moving north, you get link's 'raising special item' tiles instead of the regular 'walking north' tiles. When you pick up an item, it shows link as either a miscolored candle tile, or as the item-select tile. I don't know if this is a bug within the program or if I've fucked something up somehow. Everything looks smooth so long as you have the small shield, so I'm tempted to think it's a bug within ZQ.
By the way, this was built using 2.10. I probably could have done all this with 1.0 even, but I thought it best to use the newest stable release.

Bump. I'm terrible, I'm sorry.
Noone's given this a whirl? I know it's not necessarily gorgeous, but it's a blast to play, and I'd love some feedback! Half an hour of your time. ;)

edit: blue_knight: Yes, that was the theme I was going for. A good mashup of Z1+Z2 all top-view. Kind of like a LoZ 1.5

It looks interesting, I'll give it a shot later. So it looks like you have a RPG/Z2 style overworld and Z1 style locations within that overworld? Cool idea.
