Mt Redoubt, about 106 miles SW of Anchorage, started acting weird about a week ago I guess.
Pretty exciting shit. I just read about it this morning, and although it's pretty much died down by now it's still pretty cool. We're far enough away (Fairbanks) so the least we would get is some tremors and a light fall of ash.
I've never been anywhere near a volcano that's active like this! I know there are active volcanos in Hawaii and what not, are there any of you living near one? What's it like? Do you have 'volcano drills' at school and shit?

Just like Mt. St. Helens blew her lid... so will Mt. Redoubt. I wasn't around for Helens (I lived in SC at the time)... but Paul was in the panhandle of Idaho. He said it wasn't a fun experience. Good luck firebug... :)

Sounds like you'll miss the bad stuff, and just get the good stuff (like the earthquakes). Have fun. :)

As for volcanoes here, there was a small scare when Mt. St. Helens became active again, but it's pretty much died down.

Both St. Helens and Redoubt are probably connected to Yellowstone... it's quite a distance for either of them to redoubt, but still...

It's the lahars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lahar) you gotta watch out for.
