It's dumb enough to just be playing around with explosives (he was lighting and extinguishing the fuse, not planning to USE the fireworks), but to be so dumb as to think "Oh oh gosh, I don't want anyone to hear this. I 'd better muffle the thing." instead of "Oh crap, I have an explosive object in my hand. I'd better chuck it as far away as possible and then seek cover."

I feel sorry that he lost a hand and leg, but modsbannit! The guy's a dumbass, and he would have gotten owned one way or another.
