... Ok, who's bright idea was it to remove the very nice looking mouse pointers for the tile editor and replace them with these ugly 2-color mouse cursors we have now?

Bring back these full-color mouse cursors please.

Or better yet, make it an option.

*GASP* What if you're a lefty? O_O

Or upside down!!! Or don't even HAVE a mouse!

If you think I should lay off the midnight sugar, press 1...

Yeah really, I don't care that much, but I'm surprised it was changed in the first place. I'd have imagined they'd be next to each other, with an "L" and "R" above each to indicate which is which, just in case you're a moron like me.

It was my idea.

Those icons take up precious colors that the GUI has to use. I'd rather remove them to free up a Cset to let tileset makers have more freedom. (as ZC is so restrictive as to be nearly unusable for creating serious artwork, it only interests me as it poses a challenge)

*bumpity, bump bump bump*

Oh Devs.... A little commentary would be nice.

I think this would indeed be a better approach to how it currently is.

Well, if the mouse was taking up more colors, you could just make it composed of a single black outline with otherwise transparent centers, save for the colors assigned to the buttons, which would be similarly transparent if using the transparent color. Simpler.

I'm not talking about the mouse graphic which used to display what color was assigned to what button. I'm actually talking of the pointers your mouse has, (Like the ZQuest arrow, or even that default, boring Windows Arrow..) ... Why did they go from full-color to 2-color? It looks ugly now. :|

Every colors that displays on Zquest uses the reserved Csets. They just made it 2 color to free up the color usage on Csets.

I'd like to take this moment to remind the developers I'm ALWAYS willing to design a new GUI/icons for ZC. Perhaps something more color-efficient? Because I agree; The new icons do indeed suck major ass

I don't really like the 2 colors, but it honestly doesn't matter. I still know what all the icons do no matter how many colors they have. I'd be more worried about the quality of what I'm actually drawing than what the stupid tools look like.

While it might be possible to bring back colored cursors again, in order to keep them from clashing with 8-bit icons, they would have to be dynamically remapped to colors used by the gui (which, at the moment, generally include a few shades of grey, the titlebar colors, a blue, and a yellow).

Sephiroth

Why were they removed in the first place?

Dark Nation

Because they were clashing with the last row of colors in 8-bit tiles.

Alright, so the new cursors are epic fail, but could we just create a
new palette and set the cursor/GUI/everythingelsecolors there?

cbailey78

Or we could have Xbox 360 graphic cursors!

Since resources are limited would the 16 color EGA pallet be an option? Most 8-bit editors of their time did something along those lines to save colors for use in the game. Its not the most aesthetic option but it does provide enough colors for a respectable interface.

We can either have color cursors, or the normal Win95 raised panel-style interface.

What's the point behind that question? We had both before.

Nicholas Steel

and NOW you can't, well you can't if you want more colours for your quests and stuff >.>

Dark Nation

Let me rephrase:

1. Color cursors
2. Win95-style 3D interface
3. 240-color tiles where you can actually see the correct colors for the last 16 colors in the palette.

Pick 2. Before, we had 1 and 2. People complained that they were seeing wrong colors for the last cset in 8-bit color mode in the tile editor, so now we have 2 and 3. The remaining option is to make it so that you can only have 224-color tiles in 8-bit mode (you'd use Csets 0-13 instead of 0-14 like you do now). That way, you get your pretty color cursors, the Win95-style interface, and correct 8-bit colors (though you'd lose the ability to use CSet 14 with 8-bit tiles).

Not that I want to be hostile or anything, but this argument is ridiculous.

Although I like th colored tiles better, I really don't see why it's such a big deal. It's certainly not worth sacrificing a cset for.

Nicholas Steel

If it IS the colour tiles that stay, make them be next to each other instead of offset diagonally.

Dark Nation

The color squares you are mentioning have no bearing at all on the issue. They work no matter what.
