A couple weeks ago, I set up a new fresh water aquarium. See photos below and tell me what you think. :)

Fish are rad. Nice chunk of difference varieties. It looks kinda weird with wires just coming to and from it though. [shrug]

Yeah, you can get backgrounds to stick to the back of the tank... maybe I should find a good background.

I know what species each and every fish in your tank is:

2 Oscars (1 Black, 1 albino)
3 African Cichlids (1 Male Kenyi, 1 Female Kenyi, and 1 albino)
1 Golden Barb
At least 3 Tiger Barbs
At least 1 Fire Mouth Cichlid
And an Albino Plecostomus

Anyway, that's a nice fish tank you got there. It's pretty big, compared to the one I'm keeping my fish in until at least tomorrow, because I too am going to move all 20 of my fish to a bigger aquarium that my mother paid for.

Maybe sometime, I'll show you guys all the fish that I have, and maybe some fish that I might buy after I move my current fishes to the larger tank.

Backgrounds also help the fish feel safer in their environment (or so I was told when I purchased my Black Lace Angels (when I was a teenager)). It helps them feel secure with one side of their environment is constant. :)

Neat fish hon :)

Oooh, pretty :) My dad got my son a big fish tank like that for his 2nd birthday. It just has big gold fish in it. There was a koi fish, but my boy got all experimental while I was at work one day, and squirted some chocolate syrup in the fish tank... the koi was the only one that died. Boooo.

...fish in my tank keep dying. After about 15 fish, we've actually given up. It's kind of depressing.

Well, nice fish man.

Koi are mad expensive. That must've sucked.

Got any tips? I only ask because I do, too - I got wires wires all over the damn place, and I just don't have the organizational skills to figure out how best to keep it all tidy.

it's common sense stuff, really.

he's made a complete mess out of the situation here (http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f389/minerman12/IMG_0205.jpg). one tip to make it look slightly nicer would be to run all the wires he has hanging up all over the place down the side of the fireplace and nail them tightly down with some wire studs. then either run them under the carpet or shift the aquarium to hide the rest of them out of sight.

for an example, here's an old picture (http://i33.tinypic.com/bdv81u.jpg) from my living room taken shortly after I put together my entertainment center. if you absolutely have to run anything along a wall, try to purchase an extension coord that matches it's color. you can also run them under carpet, behind a wall, or purchase concealers like I did under my TV that match the color of the paint (they can even be repainted for an exact match).

Or for those of you who have testicles and realize wires are awesome, you could do nothing.

You know, testicles and organization are not mutually exclusive.

Thanks! I did not realize that the male kenyi (orangish-yellow) was actually a kenyi. I figured that it was a different species until I found out that they look different based on sex. Good luck with your fish move.

Thanks, hey you should try one more time, and maybe me and some others could provide some assistance. This is my first tank, but I've had some success so far, and I've been doing A LOT of reading up on how to care for them. My selection is a little iffy, but im doing everything else by the book, and they are doing fine so far.

Yeah, I'm only renting this house for a year. I'm not going to worry too much about that stuff until I actually buy. Considering the amount of wires I have going everywhere, if I started nailing them all down, I'd start putting holes all over this brand new house. I'm not sure what the owner would think about that. But, I will probably eventually do a background, which should conceal some of the wires.

Or for those of you who have testicles and realize wires are awesome, you could do nothing.

I whole-heartedly agree. I'm an electrical engineer, so I think all my wires are an awesome expression of modern art. :D

lol I'm an electrical engineering undergrad. It must be an EE thing. =)

You know, testicles and organization are not mutually exclusive.

It would be false to assume that because I don't spend time practicing the metrosexual art of feng shui with my wires and cords that I am disorganized. I am extremely organized these days. I have to be.

My room is 1/2 recording studio and 1/2 computer laboratory. It looks crazy and neat and I would have a brain annurism if I tried to hide all the cords.

... run them under the carpet ...

I heard somewhere that that's a fire hazard. Can anyone corroborate?

I guess technically it could be, but people do this all the time. I've never seen an electrician do this, but yeah...As long as the insulation on your wiring is secure, there will be no issue. It is true, that even wires with insulation, generate some heat. But, any wires that you're going to run under carpet, are not likely to generate any significant heat.

how often are speaker wires known to randomly burst into flames?...

Modus Ponens

Probably not often. I only brought it up because, as I said, I heard it somewhere. Which means it's true.

AtmaWeapon

I guess maybe if you accidentally plug the speaker wire into the outlet or hook up a car battery to them it could happen. You can never be too safe!

*edit* On second thought, maybe over time the wires could get frayed and short on the carpet, but I'm thinking the voltage that speakers operate at is too low for concern. If you're an idiot and run extension cords under the carpet, maybe it's a real concern. Extension cords in your living room means your furniture is in the wrong configuration. Try again.

Breaker I want to come play video games at your house it looks really cool.

Cloral

I put the wire to one of my rear speakers under a throw rug in the living room. No problems.

The question, as stated above, is how hot does the wire get. But if your wire is generating any significant amount of heat, it probably means that your exceeding its safe operating parameters anyway.

Modus Ponens
08-05-2008, 01:25 PM
Okay, right. I wasn't thinking correctly. It's a speaker wire! So of course, it's not going to cause any problems. What I was thinking of was an extension cord, which one should not run under a carpet.
