View Full Version : A Super Mario Bros world record

Like I've mentioned in the title, a Super Mario Bros world record has been set. However, it's not a speedrun or anything like that, it's something novel, something that hasn't ever been attempted before. The worlds highest jump.

Absolutely amazing.

Am I missing something? 'Cause that seemed extremely stupid. And what is semper games?

Oh man, the kids who respond to this are stupid.

ITS OBVIOUSLY FAKE BECAUSE GAME FUEL WASN'T OUT IN 1999 BUT HE SAID THEY WERE DRINKING IT!!!!

The video itself was worth a laugh (I mean, video game world records are pretty dumb...) but the comments just reveal so much about the stupidity of the internet.

Um, he actually did this. In front of several dozen people:

And what is semper games?

JihadJerry, the guy who performed that stunt was amazed at how many people were attacking him over the authenticity of his world record, even getting death threats over it. "Semper Games" is a movement started as a result of the attacks, coined as a term for symbolizing the gamer lifestyle and defending their honor, even in the face of death. It's kind of hard to explain, but one of JihadJerry's friends made a good video explaining it:

And this is gamemasterjasper's manifesto (he's the one who originally posted jihadjerry's video), where it all started:

And of course, JihadJerry is not so busy promoting the Semper Games message that he doesn't have time to break any records. Here is another record breaking attempt at the worlds longest jump, this time playing Mario 3:

That is rediculously fake. Game Genie FTW indeed...

P.S. - if you need any more proof, the "proof" video is obviously doctored. Someone in the comments said it was from King of Kong, which I haven't seen, so I don't know. But if you look at the shot of the game on screen, the angle of the game area is different than the angle of the television -_- Also, no way in hell you are getting a picture that clear on a CRT television in 1999 (with no glare even!).

This looks like an elaborate viral troll more than anything else.

This was recorded in 1999 and is footage of Super Mario Bros. for the original Nintendo.OK, so our date is 1999.

You'll have to excuse the poor quality of the video. I ripped it directly from a years old betamax tapelol what? The footage is good quality, and the audio is good quality. They were using a Betamax tape in 1999 why?

It became a tradition, sip on a cold Game Fuel and watch Jerry sweat up a storm as he tried to jump to the top of the map until he inevitably gave up in frustration.Except Mountain Dew Game Fuel was a Halo 3 promotion in 2007 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_Fuel#Other_promotions). I suppose the argument could be, "They said it was a tradition, maybe they do it now!" One year is hardly long enough to make something a tradition.

I seem to remember JihadJerry; theplustwo made his avatar and he changed his name to Allah's Jet the last time I paid attention to anything. This reeks of elaborate FYAD prank.

*edit* Oh sorry, epic YCS prank; the thread's the first google result for "semper games", which I might add is new enough that it doesn't exist in Google Trends (http://www.google.com/trends?q=semper+games)

You're trying too hard Alex.

That kid wins at everything.

That kid cheated with his game genie to get that high. Getting that way naturally requires real talent. And of course he's an aspie who can barely form a coherent sentence.

Kids like these and haters like Warlock and Atma are why the whole Semper Games movement was started, to stand up against people who hate games and those who play them.

You know, this whole thing reminds me of back when I was a kid. A friend and I were playing Double Dragon 2. We had gotten pretty far in the game - we were on that level with the disappearing platforms and spikes. Which reminds me, that is a real pain-in-the-ass level, seeing as how jumping in Double Dragon is not really suited for platforming. Anyway, somebody had bumped the console or something, because the game suddenly glitched. Nothing major, it just flickered momentarily, and our lives counters were replaced with random symbols. I have no idea what happened, but somehow we ended up with unlimited lives. Thanks to that weird glitch, we ended up beating the game, which I was sure I'd never do. However, I've never seen that glitch again, and I would have no clue how to reproduce it.

Shame on you for never seeing the movie The King of Kong. You really should watch that sometime. It might be run on G4 again too, so check your tv guide.

AlexMax, how did JihadJerry exactly do this? Is there a certain spot in World 1-1 that you have to stand to jump that height, or do you have to repeatedly tap the jump button or what is it?

We don't get G4. And I am too lazy to rent the movie. Also I really don't care :P

It's called a crooked cartriage glitch. There were actually a whole mess of documented crooked cart glitches for Ocarina of Time, including IIRC some that let you access "developer" areas that were shown in very, very early screenshots and videos but were not in the final game.

I've jumped that high before. You just hold Right on controller 2's dpad to do a super jump. It also lets you jump in and out of pits. Makes it easier to get through the Doc Robot stages.

...

The video isn't even from and NES, its too clean and lacks the dirty noise that NES games have around outlines. Guess its getting forum discussion going though huh?

At this point I'm pretty sure this is supposed to be some kind of joke, though I don't know how making yourself look like an idiot by pretending to believe that video is real qualifies as funny.

Sounds more like an epic troll than anything, though this serves as a reminder that I should get back to GG code testing for Link's Awakening. 1,000 down, 10,000,000 to go...

I'd believe it if it came with some technical explanation. When it comes to classic games like SMB, there's tons of nerds that have been through the assembly source and can tell you everything about the jump code. If I saw some nerd come forth and point out that in certain rare instances, something gets overflowed and Mario's capable of jumping higher than usual, I'd say it's possible. See: most Pokemon glitches; I've found several-page long documents discussing how this or that bug is affected by the values in certain registers, and giant tables of the effects of performing the trick from various locations. I've seen the same analysis with several difficult-to-produce FF VI glitches.

Based on all I said and the fact that the YCS forum (http://forums.somethingawful.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=186)'s current title is "semper games", I'd be willing to bet this is just some prank by a bunch of nerds that got kicked out of FYAD, then GBS, then the general games forum. There's really not more to discuss until I see it reproduced by a few other people.

It is fake because you can't jump that high in the game. There is no "proof" because the video only shows the game screen and no person/s or controllers, or anything.... it only shows the tv/monitor.

I visit TAS websites frequently that deal in 'frame perfect'/sub-pixel positioning for glitches and various other technics to beat games absurdly fast and I think they would have mentioned it on there forums some time, if this really was possible.

Wha? I thought the Youtube people were just retarded. Is everyone here that dumb too?

Now I'm depressed. Thanks, AGN.
