I just wish he'd made it for Unreal Tournament 2004 instead of Quake 3.

Quake 3 is the better game, sorry.

Nope, I just checked, UT2k4 is better. Honestly I never played Quake 3 though. But maybe that's because Quake itself wasn't really interesting to me. Everything was dark and drab looking and nothing made much sense. The shooter itself was average. UT and UT2k4 I liked alot because it actually felt alive and exciting.

UT's entire existence is its gimmicks and mountains of content, but the gimmicks start to wear thin after a while, and most "good" UT mappers are more concerned about their maps looking like artpieces than actually playing well.

Quake is about as simple a deathmatch game as you can get, it's just that the core gameplay is so damn good that people have become ridiculously good at it and all of the newbies who normally populate the FFA and public CTF servers moved on to Counterstrike, so it's hard to enjoy a game of it without getting raped.

Thankfully, being a free browser game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quake_Zero) ought to make Quake substantially easier to access and play. Meanwhile, Epic found out the hard way that basing your entire game on newbie-friendly gimmicks isn't a solid long term strategy when said newbies get bored enough to move on to the next flavor (http://www.steamgames.com/v/index.php?area=app&AppId=240) of (http://www.halo3.com/) the (http://www.callofduty.com) month (http://gearsofwar.com/) game (http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=app&AppId=440&cc).

What gimmicks are present in UT ? (the 1999 version)

The only gimmics I can remember from UT99/GOTY are the relics. Then again, they're comparing Quake III and UT2K4, so I dunno what changes have made it 'gimmicy'.

Rocket Launcher/Grenade Launcher that shoots six homing rockets/grenades not gimmicky enough for you? There's tons of stuff like that, from weapon choices to level design choices; load up the game and look.

Seconded. Quake III is so much fun it's the only death match FPS I'll ever need.

Six? Have you even played the game? In UT99, the rocket launcher's alternative fire can be held down for it to shoot 4 rockets at once if you wait long enough. And if you keep your aim dead on someone long enough, there is a slight homing ability, but it can be dodged.

I think it's pretty clear that YOU just don't like the game. You do realize that just because you don't like a game doesn't mean it sucks right?

I wish I had an opinion on Quake III, or any of the Quake games, but I've yet to play any of them. However, I have played UT and UT2004 and I enjoyed both of them, but UT more so.

I never felt anything in UT was gimmicky, but what is considered gimmicky now was probably being pioneered back in 1999 by UT and Quake and was considered cutting edge or orginal. Just like Ocarina of Time and it's Z-Targetting.
