At the end of the original Z it would print your game-name in the text. Something like, "Thanks 'James' You're the Hero of Hyrule". It would just use whatever the name was that you entered for that save slot.

Is there a way to grab the name of the game's current save slot and use it in a message string?

Currently, no.

This could get complicated.....*thinks about an eight dimentional array twenty-six blocks wide...*

EDIT: Wait a minute. Did the LOZ do that?!

awe, it'll be okay if you index it first. ;)

Yeah, it did. You made me second guess myself, so I looked it up. Here's the Second Quest ending text:

THANKS (your name here),YOU'RE
THE HERO OF HYRULE.

<credits>

YOU ARE GREAT.

Is this even true? I thought it always said "LINK".

Why do you need such a big array for that?

Is this even true? I thought it always said "LINK".That is correct. It wasn't until LttP that the player's name was referred to in-game.

I remember in Zelda II, when you died, it would display your name and the number of lives remaining. So I named myself "I DIED" :D

Because it was late and I was delirious, and it sounded cool I guess....

My bad. That's what I have in my Zelda text files. I really thought it was that way.
