I'm buying a scooter tomorrow and I thought I'd get some of your thoughts on it. I live in a college town and it's pretty rediculous trying to get to class with my truck, which is probably why I see a hundred thousand people on these damn scooters every day. I found one on craigslist that is a pretty awesome deal. It comes with an alarm, it's brand new, and still has a 3 year warranty on it. The guy bought it at a dealer, so it wasn't some chinese import bought off the internet and assembled in a garage. Other than this stuff though, I have no idea what I should be looking for in deciding whether or not it's a good scooter. I don't want to pay too much, but I don't want to get stuck with a piece of shit either. I'm on a tight budget.

Here is a link to a website that has the exact same year and model of scooter. http://www.bikez.com/motorcycles/tank_sports_urban_50_2007.php

If that link doesn't work, here is another. http://www.rabbitscooters.com/products/131.htm

The one I'm getting is green and I'm buying it for $700. Do any of you have experience with scooters and can give me some buying tips?

Edit: Here's a real picture of it.

I don't know anything about scooters, but Green FTW!

Sorry I couldn't be of any more help. :P

I was just looking at prices at Honda and it looks like you're getting a really good deal. I'd say go for it if you can find one so cheap.

I know nothing about them, but it sure seems like a pretty good deal.

Just make sure you take it for a test drive...I know that sounds ridiculous, but I am serious.

Definitely.

Vespas are nice. I personally want a ninja 250 motorcycle. Course that will probably never happen, but you get the idea.

Vespas cost quite a bit and I don't want to buy a used scooter with a lot of mileage on it. I just want something to get to and from class and to maybe ride around the strip at the beach.

I saw the title and this was my first thought:

Ditto, actually (but not pink). ;)

I know next to nothing about scooters, too. I've never actually seen anyone use one (besides the foot-powered ones).

:P Nice. ...I'd want one, but then I'd NEVER get any excercise!

Whenever summer rolls around, I use my bike a lot. That's my primary method of getting places. ...yeah, it sucks when I'm at a friends house and there's a sudden downpour, and no one to pick me up, but hey, I haven't been struck by lightning yet!

That looks awesome. I really wish I had a scooter, but sadly I can't afford it right now. I may be able to in the fall.

btw, I forgot to mention that these little fuckers get 100 miles to the gallon. isn't that sick?

I'm planning on getting a scooter soon, too... the mileage is more than reason enough for me. I'd love to get a Vespa, but yeah, they are expensive as hell.

EDIT

A friend of mine recently got one, and was talking about how she had to either amend her driver's license, or get a motorcycle license or something... I dunno if that's actually necessary or not, though.

How fast do they go? Can you go like 50mph on a highway or something? I'd love to get one.

EDIT: Never mind. I visited the website and got the specifications.

This one goes about 40mph. You cannot legally drive it on the highway though. There is a difference between the 49/50cc scooters and the 100+cc scooters. Anything over 50cc will require you to get a motorcycle license in Florida. It might be different in other states.

Ahh... that makes sense. Now I know what to look for myself.

I can't imagine trying to ride a scooter on a highway or interstate anyhow... 40 mph is perfect for most cities.

Scooters rock. My parents have a Yamaha that's 100 cc. Of course, in my family, almost everyone has the motorcycle endorsement on their license, so that's not an issue.

My only issue with the scooter you're looking at is the carrying capacity: 200 pounds. :(

That wouldn't even carry me. Forget cargo. Speaking of cargo...I'd get one with the optional trunk.

If thats the case, you should invest in a treadmill zaphod :)

It has the trunk.. I've been reading different numbers regarding the carrying capacity. Some sites are reporting 200 and others 300. Either way, it'll support me or Amber.

Thats pretty rad actually. I've only ever seen one person ride on one around here, and that was a teacher back in high school. And that teacher lived in town by the school.

100 miles to the gallon? Thats a kick in the face to my jeep. :(

Fuel Efficiency 55-75 mpg US
thats why I want one, plus used they are only about 2500 or less

...
It's a matter of genetics. I may weigh 270 pounds, but I sure don't need a treadmill. At least I'm no pencil-necked geek.

EDIT: I probably took that a little too personally...

I bought the scooter. It's in great condition and has less than 20 miles on it. The built-in alarm is very nice. Also, I just bought two 350,000 volt stunguns off ebay for "home security". I'll keep one in the scooter and one in the house.

10 bucks + shipping. Not bad.

The stun gun is a great idea. I am looking forward to getting some personal protection, besides my intimidating glare and amazing martial arts skills. ;)

I do carry a huge, Crocodile Dundee style knife in my truck. Hopefully that will be intimidating enough to avoid a fight, and if not, hopefully I can use it well enough.
