While I think the video certainly could have been faked (the only two really compelling shots were when he painted his tail and when he was painting the flower, because I could actually see the whole elephant painting, not just his nose), I also would not be surprised if this elephant really did paint a self-portrait. Elephants are incredibly smart and are capable of recognizing pictures of themselves, so the next step is being able to create pictures of themselves. I'm just amazed at his nasal dexterity.

im sure it wasnt fake. I went to a zoo (i think last year) and they had a part where elephants painted like that. only difference was most of them painted other animals

It really is amazing how intelligent elephants really are. They're one of the few species that demonstrates self-awareness, and they have very complex social lives. I'm willing to bet this painting is genuine on that alone.
